Anyone watch this? I'm watching it now on iPlayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00s01xm/Goldsmiths_But_Is_It_Art_Episode_1/

It's really interesting, people who like art should watch it. It follows a few artists during the build up to their final show at goldsmith uni. A lot of abstract/conceptual art. For example, one woman steals things from shops by swallowing them (earrings n stuff like that) and then she shits them out and displays them. That is her 'art'... Laughing

Yep, saw it and found it really interesting (I work in an Art College, mind...). Was slightly concerned at quite how BBC4 are positioning the programme (much as they probably claim to be showing the reality of the contemporary art world, it comes across in places a bit 'look at these idiots!' - a bit BBC3, if you will...), thought there was some lovely work, many of it made by annoying people. Thought the chap who got the job in Moscow was lovely, and thought Roisin (I'm guessing she was the shitter - missed the start) was genuinely fucked-up and a blagger. Watching her final tutorial/viva/whatever it was made me think "Fuck, I know exactly what they're thinking, and what they'll be saying to my equivalent at coffee straight after this crit.". Would be interested in hearing if Stewart saw it...

how fun for her

there's a show on flemish tv about 'unknown' artists and amateurs trying to get into muhka museum exhib, and some 'art' judges decide what gets in what doesn't...it's a load of bullshit, some are narrow minded, some are so open minded they consider straight up kitsch to matter to someone else and really when i catch some of it i can't help but think 'fuck, you can never say 'that's good that isn't' ..in art..you can't give grades'.

i was so branded on doing illustration in college and continuing my high school where i followed plastic arts then they didn't let me in and i was so depressed then realised if you're gonna be graded on the stuff you do..it becomes like an obligation, fuck that. in the real world you stand behind a desk or cash register or whatever and if you're really passionate you'll come home and do this stuff because you need to or else you'll go nuts ?

i don't like museums much but i love art galleries than tend to focus not on 'but is it art ?' but just have artists that do graphic stuff that you can have in your living room for a decent price and really enjoy observing.
i love kiki smith stuff and seripop and similar artists, just to be able to have it on a screenprint and make it part of your life and not some cut up horse or shark that you have to pay to see at a museum. it sort of has to be 'real' in a way it's made by struggling people with a passion for struggling people with a passion. to make it when you're knackered when you get back from work to observe it when you get home hanging in your room.
not to make you have these thoughts of '...but is it art ?' it's too bigheaded.
at uni we had to read a book by cynthia freeland 'but is it art' ... she talks about pisano etc about making 'urine' and 'christ' become 'art'. it puts art on this abandoned platform and just so unreachable for people.

don't mean to sound like a hater, just a personal opinion, i'm sure there's people who have greater expectation of art than to just be 'enjoyed in your living room'.
