I'm going to be a Mustang n00b very soon and i am maybe prematurely looking at pickup options.
The installed pups may be okay but if not i'd like some suggestions what are good options.
Most people will think i'm going to be after a humbucker sound but this is'nt the case, i'm looking for some warm single coils with decent tone. I'm also using a Big Muff a lot lately which thickens the sound up somewhat.
I've done a bit of research on Lace Sensors as they look the part with the covers and there seems to be lots of options with output, Fralin make a vintage spec model and i have also considered the SD Strat range.

Any suggestions please?

I would do a robroe and shove one of those hot SD Jaguar pickups under a cover. Tis what I'll do if the Mustang RI pickups in my project are wack.

I've loved everything I've heard of the Bareknuckle Strat pickups. I'm eyeing up a set of Irish Tour or Apache depending on how hot I want it. You can order direct from the site and should be able to get non staggered without any extra cost.

The SJAG-2 or QP?
I dunno mike, seems like a wasted option considering i have three Jags anyway. But i like the idea of you can stick almost anything under the cover although i would imagine staggered pole pieces will be a pain.

I would definitely take a look at Bareknuckles as euan suggested.
They have a great range of singles, and I've got the Trilogy Suite in my strat - they sound fantastic.
If you have a sound in mind that you are looking for drop Tim at Bareknuckle a mail, he replies in the next day or two and knows exactly what to suggest. He often suggests slightly modified pups, or a change of magnet if it's something that isn't immediately available in his range.

I might do that before I buy actually. Because I want to use a pickup in the neck that is percussive but not overly bright or hot. Then have a bridge pickup that just rocks.

I know some awesome pickups you could use... they're not warm though.

the only thing I can think of is, I think dimarzio has some strat sized single coils that sound more like p-90s. also, their site is really great at giving you the straight dope about their pickups. they don't bullshit you like GFS.

which mustang are you getting.

if you are getting a 65RI you won't want to change the pickups.
i have sJAG-3's in my compstangRI and duo-sonic....really muddy sounding on the duo with the short neck/giant strings. on the mustang they sort themselves out much nicer.
i have a sJAG-1 in my jagstang. makes the jagstang sound like jaguar. no wool, no mudd, no fuss.

but the pickups in the 65RI are fucking perfect. if you do get that model and dont like the pickups think of me before you get rid of them. i <3 them

i think the most well rounded pickup i own is the duckbucker in my bronco. its the perfect pickup for a one pickup guitar. no hum, really middy but it doesn't peak, its more mellow. the 65RI pickups when one is turned off you can get to peak in the mids.

i should get out some crayons and make you a sonic graph with bellshaped curves how these pickups sound to me.

Its Coyotes parts-Mustang with the '65 neck.
I know about the SJAGs as i have them in my CIJ Jaguars, so i was looking for ideas that i would'nt usually consider. Like the Bare Knuckles and the Blackouts.
Maybe the pups are okay that are in there, i dont know yet. Wink
