Tits ahoy. The Goth SG arrived today. It's in good shape and I got a killer deal on it.
I lowered the bridge a bit and tuned it up. Pickups are very mid-rangey but I was thinking of looking for some EMGs to put in it to make this my metal recording guitar or whatever. Not sure yet.
Another option is to get some of those GFS humbuckers and chrome it out.

ALSO:
This shit definitely doesn't have an ebony fretboard like Musiciansfriend describes. I love ebony.

most of the "ebony" that companies use is really just bastard rosewood thats filled and stained.
i remember a mid 90s gibson les paul that came into the st louis shop that was a good example of this.

isn't it sort of classic for a lot stringed instruments to have "ebonized" fretboards?

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Finishing_supplies/Colors,_tints,_and_stains/Black_Fingerboard_Stain.html

but hey, awesome guitar. is this like the tommy iommi sig or is that another all black one? yea, I would definitely stay with the black. no chrome. EMGs would be cool.

My mate's had one of those for ages, it's a really cool guitar. He basically knows nothing of guitar maintenance or anything like that, and it's literally fallen apart from heavy usage. Somehow all the screws have managed to fall out more or less, the pickups are therefore just bouncing around in their rings and the jack keeps disappearing into the body. It's funny because he still rocks it out, and metal isn't even his style.

I actually quite like the way those look, with the matte finish and matching headstock, I'd say keep it all black, but I despise EMGs.

if you were gonna chrome it, why wouldn't you just get a regular SG?

Because if you get a dodgy goth SG at a bargain price because it's considered ugly and therefore less value, it might work out cheaper to modify certain parts to taste. Wink

I offered to de-goth my friend's one, simply because it was so battered it made sense to work with what he had rather than sell it and buy a non-goth one.

The main reason I wanted one of these is the finish is like a satin finish and it makes the neck feel really really good. I've been wanting one for a long long time since I wanked around with one in a store, they never lowered they're price from like $399 and it's probably still there.

i might just go with chrome pickups because I really don't like open coils and I haven't played emg's enough to figure out if i like them yet.

Chick packed two sets of new strings in the guitar, so I put them on and did some trus rod adjustment and the thing has megaboner playability now. I'm gonna try it out today at a show and see how it works out. Also it has GROVER tuners, I don't know shit about tuner brands, but aren't they supposed to be pretty good or something?

most epiphones come with grovers.

my epiphone soapshire has them

one of the main reasons that epiphone gets more respect than squier is because epiphone puts name brand parts on thier stuff. squier not so much

this black thing is like the polar opposite of the soapshire

both of the epiphone les pauls sitting in my shop right now came with the gibson replica, plastic, things they called tuners, they were all sorts of shit and were always slipping(the actualy gear, would slip, no joke)
ones getting grovers and the other is getting pings.

yea my dot studio has grovers. I think epiphone puts them on most of their mid and upper range guitars. like robroe said, that is one of the decent things about epiphone, they use good parts.

I used this thing yesterday and it kicked ass, didn't even switch guitars the whole time. I tried to roll off the volume for cleans, but it pretty much told me to fuck off and just stayed distorted anyway. I thought I would have to change the pickups, but they sonded pretty sweet. We got some video footage and If I'm not embarrassed to post it, you can see it in all it's goth glory. wtf.
