I know some of you guys have been as interested as I have been in the Schecter Ultra VI since it was announced last month, so I figured I'd share here what I know about what's up with it and how things are transpiring pre-production.

Obviously, it's a VI style bass using Schecter's Ultra III design, and its FG-101 humbuckers and controls at a 30" scale length, tuned E-e (From the E of a standard bass to the second octave of a standard guitar... or, 1 octave below standard guitar). The body is mahogany with a set mahogany neck. The bridge and hardtail are TOM style, like on the Hellcat VI.

Initially the Ultra VI was going to come with 250k pots, like the Ultra III and the Hellcat VI, and .022uF cap., but with input from some people on the Schecter Hellcat VI & Ultra VI Players Facebook group, Schecter's made some changes that will improve the tone over that of the Hellcat VI, such as switching to 500k pots and .047uF cap for a brighter tone with more high end and clarity. Additionally, a .002 Treble bleed cap has been added to the volume pot to maintain tone at low volume.
Apparently Schecter, after applying these mods responded saying "We have tested this out and it sounds great."

The guys from the facebook group apparently also suggested a push/pull strangle switch as well, a la the Fender VI, but I don't think Schecter's responded to that request yet.

Schecter says that the Ultra VI won't be available until the spring 2011, at least.

Someone who got their hands on one of the Ultra VI prototypes informs us that the LaBella Hellcat VI strings do, indeed, fit the Ultra VI just fine too. Schecter has told us as well that GHS (IIRC) has also agreed to make strings for their VI style instruments as well. There shouldn't be much of an issue getting strings for these.

I actually contacted Schecter to try to obtain one . They're not for sale till after the NAMM festival . They're talking a street price of $650 , same as the Ultra 3 . An Ultracure Baritone is due later in the year supposedly . They rep wouldn't give me a straight answer but he did say it was HIGHLY likely later in the year .

Interesting. I've also heard tell of a C-1 VI being developed.
It's really interesting how many of their models they're at least considering to make VI versions of. It will certainly make them the place to look first if one wants some sort of VI.

Think Schecter found a somewhat missing niche to fill . Especially for the price . Ever check the prices of Jag and Bass Vis lately ?

I certainly have Razz Schecter's offerings are at most 1/3 the price of the cheapest ones from Fender I've seen in years. More often than not it's closer to 1/4 or less their price.

As far as I can tell from the build quality of my Hellcat VI, I'm not missing out on too much, other than a little switching, trem and the Fender VI look I fell in love with so long ago. But, saving at least $1000 on the purchase, I think I'll survive.

It's Ernie Ball who will be making the strings. Though, I can't believe they will be the same high-quality and low cost of the LaBellas......But, who knows?

Been playing my Ultra VI for nearly a year now... just sold my Hellcat VI and ordered a new one with SJAG-1 pickups...

Chances are the new Hellcat will be a better instrument than the Ultra VI, due to the pickups. The Duncan Design FG-103 (or whatever) in the Ultra VI are ok, but not great; the Duncan SJAG-1s in the new Hellcat will be a huge step up.
Aside from the pickups, the Ultra VI feels and looks great, and I love playing it. The tone is a little darker and less articulate than I want, kinda, and the coil split is completely useless, simply making the pickups quieter, not making them more single-coily... but I do like it. It's a bit lighter than my old Hellcat, haven't received the new one yet to compare on that front. The pickup switches are a little stiff, but work fine... with all the pickup combinations and tone control tweaking it's easy to go from thumping bass to melodic baritone.

Here's a comparison of the sounds of the old Hellcat VI and the Ultra VI I recorded last summer: http://soundcloud.com/ankhanu/sets/hc-ultra/

Here it is in action during one of our recent sets:

Is there a difference between the two colors of the new Hellcat VI? There's quite a difference in price between the two:

Maple vs. rosewood is the only difference... which, on an electric, is negligible.
The pricing is really wonky... when they were released, they were both $599. Now they're all over the goddamn place and almost all too much Razz

Ah, ok. I like the look of the rosewood, but not a deal breaker. Thanks!
