You'll need an interface (USB or otherwise) though in any case. There are several threads on here discussing budget interfaces. It will come down to how many simultaneous tracks you want to record at a time. The more tracks, the more expensive the interface. Not at all clear what your budget is at this point. Whatever interface you get will likely come bundled with a recording program of some sort. You can start with that; or download something like Reaper as Gabe suggested.

A good starting place would be to google the phrase 'reaper free'.

It used to be free, looking at the Reaper webby this morning seesm there is a $60 fee now to continue usage after 30 days.

It goes without saying you can always get the "educational" tool to software from the usual sources if you want free.

The only DAW I've ever been able to get my head around is ACID, just can't fathom the rest.

unless they changed it you don't need to buy to use it, you just get nagged by it every time it loads.

you can keep using it without a license after the 30 days.. if you want..
i finally got around to licensing it after using it for free for a couple years.

EVERYONE STOP BEING FUCKING RETARDED.

http://www.reaper.fm

download the latest version. use it as long as you want, it has a nag screen but it is FULLY FEATURED FOR AS LONG AS YOU WANT.

If you want to buy it, it's $60, unless you make more than $20,000 a year with it.
