Sholkham, the wings went back to the customer, at his request. He says he's going to use them in a sculpture. OK, whatever... Billy, I seriously gave some thought to reducing the guard size on that curly maple one, or making part of the guard transparent, but the customer wanted it authentic, so I k...

Is there a difference between polyester and polyurethane? The ash body wouldn't be the reason for it chipping. My Musicman Stingray was poly on Ash, and that thing was a beast! I could smack somebody upside the head with it, kurt cobain style, and not have any damage to the finish. Of course there'...

Billy--the big guards on these take some getting used to for anyone used to the look of Fender guards! I especially regret the guard size when it covers up so much gorgeous maple as the one on that lefty above. (BTW, it's got an identical back guard, too, to prevent buckle rash...) RLM--there are tw...

Non-Fender shorties!

Many of us consider Fender short-scales to be the "originals", with the 22.5" scale Musicmasters hitting the scene in April, 1956. But, just a few miles to the north of the Raymond Avenue plant in Fullerton, Rickenbacker was beginning to produce the Combo 400, which evolved in 1957 to...

I've been using one of these for about 2 years, mostly for pickguards--with ball bearing bits! I also use it here and there for the usual tracing of patterns, but I still prefer a regular plunge router with ball bearing bits for pocket work and routing outlines and radii over edges. I find the foot ...

Well, anyway, here's a pic of the carcass--so badly abused that I'm simply remaking it, top to bottom.

Dave: Those tuners up-thread are sort of rectangular in footprint...the ones on mine had parallelogram-shaped baseplates, with two acute angles and two obtuse. I have several sets of these from different Guyas, Teiscos, etc. There was even a Rickenbacker student guitar that used these back in the '6...

First (bandstand) shot above shows the Guyatone with Kauffman installed. Bottom, posed, shot shows it with a trapeze tailpiece, probably the original.

Ringo was playing Johny Guitar's Guitar. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/fuzztone65/Guyatone%20guitars/GuyatoneJohnnyGuitarRingo58-5.jpg "THIS NAME isn't getting us very far," Alan Caldwell said to his Raving Texans one night in 1959. "We'll call ourselves the Hurricanes and c...

Guitar is exactly like the one Ringo's playing, except black in color. Same pickups, teacup knobs. But guard is one piece acrylic, not two, and has a weird 1/8" jack socket, not 1/4".

Anyway, I'm going with a curly maple body like the higher-end models at the time.

Seven years ago, I picked up one of the Marvin Guyatones in the UK for about $80.00. Since then, I've seen a photo of Ringo Starr playing one (probably Hank's). It was in poor shape and I decided to re-do the body, then got hooked on some other projects, which have never ended. I also got two brand ...

OK. I seem to remember using Watco's years ago under a lacquer finish and having troubles with drying. Probably my teen-aged learning curve!

An stereo jack. Yup.
Yesh. An stereo jack into a breakout box would have been a more elegant solution. Saves carving-up the guitar anyway.

Exactly the same--a Squier plate lines up with one of my old bodies ('56) perfectly.
