Thanks for all the advice, guys. What I'm hearing is that this isn't a viable plan for the immediate future, but it could be a second or third act for me if I pay the bills, do my homework, and am utterly serious about it. I'll definitely pick up the Hiscock book and any others you recommend. At som...

You made this mess, shortscale. Help me clean it up?
Not sure whether this thread belongs here or in the pub. Mods can move it if they prefer. I have been quietly obsessed with guitars, on and off, ever since I was 10 years old. Since I joined shortscale, I've gotten a lot less quiet about it, and the modding bug has bitten. Also since then, I've comp...

Comfiest bass I've ever played. I fell in love with the neck and had to have one and make a project of it. You did the right thing by getting rid of the stock pickup immediately; other mods are lower-priority but nice to have. I' m going to get around to refinishing mine one of these weeks. And welc...

I'll try heavier strings this time around. Aaand... possibly stupid questions ahead: What are the pros and cons going to be of flatwound vs. round wound? What kind of results would I see, sustain-wise, from changing the bridge? My inclination would be to go with a top-loading bridge. Based on honeyi...

I actually didn't notice the strat jack at first. I think the Bigsby balances it visually and makes it less obtrusive. However, it leaves the control plate end of the pickguard looking a little naked where the jack is supposed to go. Not sure what to do about that, if anything. I like the looks of e...

Broncomaster bass refin: oops.
Well, the dissertation is defended, deposited, I'm a doctor*, and there's nothing left for me to do now but, er, get a job. ((hide)) And last fall, I promised myself that when I finished the dissertation, I'd refinish the Broncomaster bass. It's still the original Torino red, but I can't stand havin...

I'm small, have small hands, etc. It just hit me, reading this thread and looking around the room, that every guitar I own is either a short scale or a Gibson scale, except for one full-scale bass. I can manage it, but it sure isn't comfy, and I look like a six-year-old holding it. I gravitated towa...
