Re: pictures of your guitars here

There were two official runs I've seen in catalogs / price lists. The earliest had a Standard and Deluxe model, with the only difference being body material as far as I know. (Oddly, the Standard was walnut while the Deluxe was mahogany. Would expect the opposite nowadays). Both were exclusively bro...

Re: pictures of your guitars here

Link goes to a blank page for me :( Anyway I asked because I have a "The Paul" from the same period, a close relative. It came with a harmonica bridge which was also corroded, although not that badly. Took a lot of searching to find something to retrofit. More to the point, seeing your Son...

Re: pictures of your guitars here

Did that Sonex have a harmonica bridge originally? Wondering what you replaced it with if so.

Re: Firefly FFTL - A cheap Tele Deluxe / LP hybrid

Thanks! Even more so IMO after this latest mod. I find the Surf 180 pickups to be more versatile than the name suggests, but, they especially live up to that name if you want them to. Nice jangly cleans that sound great with copious reverb and some boost. So I did a thing. Probably will get a roller...

Re: Firefly FFTL - A cheap Tele Deluxe / LP hybrid

After getting it back together and playing it plugged in, the pickups decidedly are the weakest part of the factory build. GFS was having a sale, so I ordered a set of Surf 180s (which I had always been curious about anyway). Fits the aesthetic perfectly IMO. I might change the pickguard though...ha...

Re: Firefly FFTL - A cheap Tele Deluxe / LP hybrid

Hmm, looking at the website, it looks like they do one of everything. There's an SRV strat, a Buckethead LP, the Prince telecaster, EVH strat, EVH wolfgang thing, Jimmy Page double neck, gretsch/tele mashup thing, all sorts. Except for bass, where they have one PJ bass which treats "generic&qu...

Re: Firefly FFTL - A cheap Tele Deluxe / LP hybrid

First things first, clearing up curiosities on the neck. I can't say whether the frets are truly stainless, or whether the nut is bone---at the very least, it's not the cheap plastic you'd typically find on a guitar at this price---but that said, I'm impressed. Fretwork is flawless, and the inlays a...

Firefly FFTL - A cheap Tele Deluxe / LP hybrid

Ever heard of the brand Firefly?  Nope.  Ever seen a new guitar with a roasted maple neck, stainless frets, bone nut, and locking tuners, all for $250?  Nope to that too.  Not until YouTube randomly suggested this video .   Despite the intriguing specs and wealth of glowing reviews, I wasn't at all ...

Re: EVH Wolfgang Hardtail

I like it, but the lack of a tummy contour would probably bother me. I think I'd overlook that though if it felt right otherwise. Plus, even though these aren't exactly rare, I'm sure it will only go up in value with both the EVH and Wolfgang name on it.

Re: '99 Stratocaster pickup query

Not that it matters too much now that it's sold, but if you believe the site below (which personally I am inclined to do based on various other forum posts I found), this guitar is a bit of an oddball that was only sold for a couple years. Pieced together from MIM and "Eastern" parts...ass...

NGD: SubZero Rogue VI

Do I want a Bass VI?  I dunno, not sure I'd get along with the large body, pickup switches and Jag trem.  Do I want to try a 30" scale hambaker offset for cheaper than the cheapest Bass VI?  Absolutely.  tl;dr: This thing is impressive for the money, but if you're interested in getting one, be ...

Re: Ibanez RG760 Restomod

Amazing how well this turned out! The finish on my '92 RG570 is brittle, and if it had the same thing done to it I feel like removing the top layers would've ruined it. I'm envious of the cosmo black, it's rare to find an original Edge in that color. And the ones I've seen on Reverb are far more exp...

Re: pictures of your guitars here

I didn't feel like this warranted a new thread so in here it goes. I've recently redone my 1983 Strat and I'd say it's now the classiest looking guitar I own. The pickguard is gold anodized and doesn't photograph as well as it looks in person. Fretboard is unfinished and has gotten super dirty so I ...

Re: NGD - Squier VM Tele Custom project

Great project! I've never considered wrapping a bushing in tape to fit a larger hole, what a simple solution. I think I once made a dowel, glued it in and drilled a new hole just to make a bushing fit it - a shitton of time and effort it took me to do. As far as I remember those P90s have to be sup...

Re: NGD - Squier VM Tele Custom project

Turned my attention to the body for a while. Either a previous owner had the most acidy acid sweat ever, or it was left out in the rain. How is there rust under the bridge?! Under all the hardware actually. http://i.imgur.com/qEhLS0qh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dmm5A0yh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/tL4GH42h.j...

Re: NGD - Squier VM Tele Custom project

Alright, finally getting started on this thing. Rather than work on the body damage, I decided to get it playing first. The frets were pretty beat up, and I wanted to try doing a level and crown. Amateur hour up in here but I'm satisfied with the results. A couple things surprised me after taking th...

NGD - Squier VM Tele Custom project

A while back I promised myself I wouldn't buy any more guitars until I got all my broken ones in working order...and well, I've done a pretty good job of sticking with that, but at $100 I couldn't pass this up. This model is from the late 00s. I actually had one of these in 2010ish and regretted sel...

Re: Black Jazzmaster Project

the neck pickup is a bloody Gibson USA something something, it's most probably a 498T because it sounds so much like my old LP Studio, but could be a Burstbucker too - there's no marking on it to discern. If it's a BB it ought to have a sticker on the back saying which one it is. Someone could've r...

Re: Machine heads!

I have D'Addario (Planet Waves) auto-trim tuners on one of my guitars and love them. It seems like a gimmick but it's not. It's convenient, yeah, but they also hold tune well. That said, I'd probably just do Kluson-style with the slot where you pre-trim the string and insert it in the top of the pos...

Re: Finishing a high school project

Well, it's not in perfect condition otherwise...the finish is gone from the edge of the fretboard, and it has several noticeable scratches. It does have sentimental value, though, so I I'm leaning toward fixing it. I really like the profile. On the other hand, the only one I can find for sale is $69...
