In my experience, either is worth buying if you're running a 50w or greater valve half stack. A good master volume renders them unnecessary. Not to me mate, and I have pretty extensive experience with using a hotplate on my old marshalls. Preamp and poweramp distortion are different kinds of beasts...

Paul wrote that, not Doog. fix'd What valves (tubes) are you running in your handmade beast? preamp: three ecc83's output: four el34's the handwired circuits aren't all that different from biasing a modern marshall, really. i just never knew how to bias amps, where to put the multimeter, what to re...

I heard a lot of people moan about Powerbrakes, but using one on a plexi RI Marshall didn't really hurt the tone as badly as I thought - until heavy levels of attenuation obviously. I had a THD 16 ohm for my old JMPs and that worked more or less as well as the powerbrake, with the advantages of a co...

i also learned how to bias all of my amps through the course of this, so that's always good. Damn right it is! A proper bias can take a valve amp from good to fucking outstanding. I was lucky that my LC50 was biased perfectly when I bought it... with feedback and at a decent volume I can get about ...

A handmade, point to point Plexi clone that you built with your dad? That sounds like one of the all-time most satisfying projects. Looks fucking awesome.

Chris, I'll gladly take one of those clean boost pedals from you for $40-50 plus whatever UK shipping is (I think around $20-25 going from eBay experience). Been hankering for a mosfet based one since I sold my SCP a few years ago.

Meh. I was in Denmark Street on Wednesday, when I put the deposit down on my Jag HH, should have tried a JVM then. Because without trying one, further objective criticism is impossible. It needs to be my hands on my guitar before I can tell. I'd be very surprised if it sways me from the awesome powe...

erm. Can you keep this meaningless discussion out of my thread of awesomeness please? Andy you can't just wander in here with that crap - There are TWO Marshall half/quarter stacks there. Have some reverance ffs! I can't help it, I'm a goddamn catalyst for making a thread wander off-topic. Oh and F...

I fucking LOVE stereo amp setups, with delays set to bounce about from one amp to the other. Especially with TAP delays. I had my Marshall JMP with SOund City (fanes) 4x12 on the left and my RI Fender Twin on the right. Mixing those two types of sound really worked. Oh and fucking chorus makes way m...

I used to play with a guitarist in a covers band that had a Boss GT-8. It was horrible. Every time he turned it on his amp sounded like plastic city. Disgusting thing. Chances are he was using one of the preamps for distortion, basically feeding a preamp simulator into a real valve preamp. That's o...

Tasty. I've been really impressed with the 'Tape' delay on the GT-8 although it doesn't oscillate like the real thing. If this oscillates it'll be freakin' sweet.

...makes me wonder why they didn't do this sooner.

Also, what is that orange gauge above the BOSS logo for?

Mike, I really respect the fact you took all that subjective opinion so well. A lot of people (Harmony Central forums anyone?) would have gone a little spare after dropping a lot of dough on such a beast then having a Laney fanboy criticise it. I'd love you to try and recreate a Pantera drop-D metal...

Okay I've gotta hand it to Marshall, looks like they were listening in regards to the footswitch issues of the past - I trust Mike's judgment he's thorough. Wonder if it's capable of detuned thrash with an active humbucker without sounding fizzy and tinny.

Can I come and jam at your place Mike? :)
