I've done this before, albeit with some old cassette tapes, and doing things two tracks at a time can be a nightmare to get alligned right. Tape stretches, and it doesn't necessarily stretch the same amount on successive passes. If your budget can afford it and your 4-track can accommodate it; I'd r...

There's a bunch these days. USB or Firewire; or sometimes a custom serial cable depending on the box.

That article has some good info--basically adding mass and sealing gaps around doors and such where sound can leak out. Your concrete wall is likely the most massive in your space so not sure what the carpet will do. If you're concerned about reflections/standing waves you're better off putting up s...

All of the horn tracks were done as overdubs. I tracked the drums, bass and guitars all together then circled back and did the horns and vocals as overdubs.

Not really; I just lined 'em up and stuck dynamic mic's on each one. The original tracking day there were only three guys there (bari sax, trumpet, trombone); then the alto sax guy and trombone player came back a different night. They all solo at different points so 8 I had to have them on separate ...

It was a guy I work with son's ska band. He plays trombone. They have a four person horn section which was new for me as well. I've recorded horns before; but always as a solo instrument. I can post one of the tracks tomorrow. Bunch of highschool or just out kids. The bass player had a Musicman bass...

Happy Accident

So I was recording a band two weeks ago and couldn't get either of my direct boxes for the bass guitar to work--weren't passing signal. I think it was a wonky cable that I'd soldered up the night before; but in my frustration, I plugged the dudes based into my G-K 800RB head, unplugged the cab, and ...

Yep, and you never hear of people doing "split CDs"; but loads of bands do split 7-inches. Vinyl is a good format for that kind of mini-release.

Yeah, bass is usually the biggest problem--that and the vocal mics if they're open. When doing actual "recordings" I try and limit it as much as possible; but then alot of the stuff recorded at ALBQs turns out pretty decent so what the hell do I know.

Yep. I did my whole studio in rockwool and OC 703; but it cost a boat load. You might try just treating a couple of walls or portions there of with carpet or something to deaden the highs and see how it goes. You can always take an incremental approach--put some treatments up, check the results; the...

Looks like a fun novelty and pretty cheap if you've already got an iPhone. Not sure the recording quality would be all that great but possibly good enough. It's a bit limiting in that you can only record single tracks at a time. It would be better if they made a version that allowed stereo recording.

The best thing is rigid insulation (Owens-Corning 703 or the equivalent) or rockwool--something that has fairly even sound absorption across the spectrum. The problem with blankets and the like is they tend to just abosorb the highs; leaving the sound muddy and boomy. Unfortunately those insulation ...

Yeah, the MP3 format is "compressed" but that's in terms of file size/bit depth/blah blah blah rather than audio compression. Do the AIF or WAV export and then convert to MP3.

Normalizing just takes the peak level up to 0 dBFS and raises everything else up the same amount; so you can get the same effect by just raising your master fader until it's hitting just under there.

You can probably do it somewhat in Garageband depending on what plugins you have. T-racks as Stewart mentioned is a mastering suite type plugin that has a whole host of things to use. In a perfect world, you would export your tracks as they are with -3 to -6 dB of headroom and send them off to Georg...
