Yep, it's because it's not compressed or limited to all hell like most modern music is. Keep everything below 0 dBFS on your digital meters; if you're getting overs that means it's clipping and could sound harsh when translated by D/A converters in consumer gear. What you're hearing is the differenc...

Great headphones are overrated for tracking, you should be fine. Have fun and report back on how it all goes.

That all sounds good. If drums are in a separate room and bass is DI'd then I'm not sure why he'd DI the guitar; unless he's talking about taking it in as a parallel input which makes some sense. Check if he's setup to reamp the bass back through an amp if you're not happy with the direct tone. Also...

I'm not a fan of cubase my brother in-law produces dance music and swears by it but it's not for me. logic is mac only so that's out, pro tools doesn't do midi. I think I'll have a look at Live and see if it's worth the learning curve. Cheers! Protools can do MIDI, just probably not the best progra...

All good advice and I'd say communicating with the recording dude ahead of time to discuss process will be key. Also tell him what all you'll be brining in in terms of amps, guitars, drums (how many toms, etc.)--this will help him plan ahead and have things ready before you get there. Make sure the ...

How many channels do want into the computer Gabe? USB interfaces top out at around 4 as far as I know. More than that you need to look at FireWire. If 2 is cool you can get adapters for your RCA outputs--either straight to an 1/8-in stereo plug or transition to two 1/4-in outputs first. He'll, tell ...

Soundtoys apparently has some cool new plugins and a free 45 day demo or something like that. A buddy of mine has been using them and speaks real highly of them. I still have yet to check them out.

You would connect the outputs from your mixer to it. What mixer are you using? The one on your tape machine?

If all you need is a USB based AD converter (e.g., you don't need builtin pre's or any other crap), check out the M-Audio Transit. It's cheap and the converters are reportedly pretty decent. You'd need a little combiner from Ratshack or someplace else to get from mixer outputs (presumably 2 x 1/4-in...

Check with Mike or Dots and see if you can get an Uploader account--then you can.

BTW, cool article in last month's TapeOp (just getting around to reading it) on the guys that run Ableton.

I'd say this is the start to a dangerous road. You may as well have used the phrase 'fix it in the mix'. Recording is most enjoyable and successful once you establish the idea that the best practice is to record things the way you want them to sound to begin with. You want some flexibility of cours...

Make sure you've got any of the inboard effects off or muted out, those things can hiss like a banshee.

Apparently it extends the low frequency response a bit, smooths out the midrange bump some, and adds a bit more high frequency response. It also lowers the output.

Anyone try modding their SM57? A buddy of mine is supposed to come over at some point and we'll mod a couple. I think it mainly involves taking the transformer out. In any case, will report back if we ever get around to it. I used to have three but gave a couple to a buddy of mine and am currently d...

toms nice and loud--rock! Good stuff man. Have you heard of the Glyn Johns 3-mic setup? Should be ableo find something via Google search; but it's basically a mic in the kick, mic over the snare (several feet above it, pointing down) and then a mic horizontal over the floor tome/ride cymbal pointing...
