And so I'm just now listening to the Damned's Black Album--so kind of the bass tone on "Hit or Miss" to get in the ballpark of what I'm angling for.

Got it! http://bestnetworx.com/uploader/files/26/Squire.Bass.VI.JPG Still has the stock strings on it, though he gave me a spare set had gotten awhile back--D'Addario; said they were the cheap set. What would you (Bear Boy) recommend as far as strings go if I decide to get something else? Anyway, pr...

No new bridge, he just put ferrules in the posts to keep it from shifting. Looks like I should be able to meet up with him tomorrow to grab it. Will post pics!

Oh, and in terms of tone--I want that mid range/high cliff/definition/heft/chunk tone. I had an old recording from an ALBQ of I think AEN playing Fredo and Rochelle's Fender Bass VI and OH MY FUCKING GOD. When the bass dropped in on that song I fell in love. Unfortunately the drive I had a bunch of ...

It's white/cream with tort trim from my memory of the photo I saw of it. It is from a mate of mine; and I recall when he listed it he indicated he had replaced the stock bridge--just messaged him to confirm. He also said he's giving me an extra set of strings. He's a pretty deft player and he used i...

Squire Bass VI

Scored one off a buddy of mine ($300). Still waiting to get a schedule together where I can grab it from him, but pretty excited. I love love love the tone from Fredo & Rochelle's legit Fender Bass VI but that would never be in the cards in current financial circumstances. I'm hoping my budget a...

I think Corsair as the OP responded well to the critique and it should stand as that. He wasn't continuing to argue any point so leaping to his defense or contending that what he wrote initially shouldn't have struck anyone as sexist seems counter productive and argumentative.

Yeah, the effort idea is probably your best bet. Carpet hung over windows and whatnot can help some. A lot of time it just sucks out the high frequencies; so not great for recording but can dampen things somewhat and help with feedback through vocal mics.

Yeah, I think that thing uses zip discs. I'd reckon you could probably get a used Korg D1600 or something for about that price that can export tracks to CD-R more easily. Still, if you're ok doing everything "in the box" on that unit then it could be useful. It has some built-in effects an...

I'd say anything you know really well, that you're familiar with how it sounds on other systems in your car, home, clubs, ear buds, whatever. The idea is to see how they sound on your monitors in your mixing environment. Try to get a sense if any frequency range is emphasized more than another--do t...

I think -12 dB rms is fine, and plenty loud. I wish more mastering engineers would work on the overall sound of the mix, as opposed to just trying to make it loud. I do some what I refer to as "ghetto mastering" for bands I record that aren't going to be able to go to a separate mastering ...

Reading the Wiki page right now. Kevin Shields says some interesting stuff in here about it too: http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/8809-kevin-shields/ Yep, and that brings up a good point--the loudness stuff really didn't start until the advent of CDs. Vinyl records, particularly classical r...

Right on, and definitely google that if you want to dig into the issue a bit more. I did after I posted that and a bunch of cool links came up--probably with better descriptions than my iPhone ramblings.

Welcome to the now. Compression and brick wall limiting kill dynamic range--something that tends to make music listenable. Sounds like they over did it in an effort to chase commercial "loudness". Google "loudness wars" and you're like to find some good info. Basically both proce...

Unfortunately, real sound proofing requires an enclosed air space around whatever source you're trying to isolate. Flanking paths are the death knell of any sound proofing scheme. In terms of materials--the higher the mass, the better the absorption--so foam is generally useless; but thick insulatio...
