Edit: It was the Ruetz Rat - Trim pot mod. I heard someone call it the Lube mod somewhere. It's replacing a feedback resistor with an internal trim pot or external pot.

The RC20 is going to look like the inside of a computer when you open it up. Is it still under warranty? Might be worth it to send it to Boss/Roland. ProCo Rat's are great pedals. Tonepad has some great projects. There are some good mods for the Rat out there to like the Lube mod.

Make sure you are looking at the datasheet for the same manufacturer of your BS170's. The pinouts vary on these.
