Mutilated Mustang Thread (Finished!)

Post by cooter »

I thought I’d do a thread on repairing punkacc’s mutilated mustang body. He said he was cool with me doing the thread and I thought it might be informative. That is, if I can pull it off. I’ve repaired some smaller ugly routes but this one will be a much bigger challenge. Just for the record. Punkacc had no part in the rape of this body. It was in this shape when he bought it.

First, let’s take a look at the carnage topside.

Image

As you can see, it’s been routed for a toggle switch on the lower horn. Someone chiseled out a shapely overflow into the control cavity for the massive swimming pool route.

Image

The trem route has been gutted down the middle and filled with glue and BB’s for fucks sake. Bridge cup holes were filled and they started drilling new holes in a different location. Numerous dents and dings scattered about.

Now the back.
► Show Spoiler
The surf green paint and punkacc’s sharpie notes actually look pretty punk rock. It appears to be in fair shape. Just a bunch of dings.

The edge on the lower bout at the control cavity has been drilled for a jack that was never installed.

Image

Well, that what we’re faced with. I’ll post more tomorrow.

I do like the sharpie. But something's gotta be done with those holes!

I removed the shielding plate and it looks like the original color was olympic white. Not that that matters much in this case.

Image

Finally got all the BB’s out of the trem routes. I’d like to find the genius who glued them in and give him back his BBs one shot at a time.
► Show Spoiler
Sanded down the body and found a few more surprises. Six holes were drilled all the way through the body and filled with whatever was handy. Glue, wood putty and even some spackling. You can see where I circled the holes in the pictures.
► Show Spoiler
I think the next step will be to drill the holes out and glue in wood dowels.

LOL. Seriously, why in the hell would they put BBs in there? Truly bizarre.

That's funny haha. And like I said to Richard, they probably thought it would add weight to it or something.. Lol

Well, it’s been a few days and I finally got a chance to get back on this.

I decided to make the pool larger and square it up.

First I marked it off and hogged out some areas.

Image

Image

Oops! Neck pocket chipped out. I was kinda expecting that to happen since the previous routes were so close.
I had a plan to redo the neck pocket if I had to but luckily all the chipped pieces were found so now it’s just a matter of piecing back a
puzzle.
► Show Spoiler
Here it is all pieced back together. When it’s finished it should be stronger than before.
► Show Spoiler
New route all cleaned up.

Image

Nice block of poplar to glue into place.

That takes care of the bulk of it. I have a couple more areas to fill and a layer of ¼ poplar to glue on before I can route it again.

Thanks guys. I'm still a little nervous about hiding all this mess under the rug so to speak.
I plan to route and glue a thin veneer over the top to cover everything.

Meanwhile, I filled the last of the damage this evening.

Excellent! Can't wait to see it all gutted.

(By the way, I haven't forgotten about doing a tracing for you. Maybe I can get that done this weekend. You just wanted the outline of the guitar body, right?)

PM'd

Update:

Today I planed a 7 wide strip down of the front of the body 3/16ths of an inch deep. The width of the red line in this picture.

Image

Then I planed down some 3 ½ wide poplar slabs.

Glued and clamped. Hopefully that’s the last we’ll see of those nasty routes.
