Harmony H-78

Post by westtexasred »

Yeah,I know I said I'm done buying guitars but when I went to my friend's store today(gotta stop going there!) he ushered me into the back room to show me "something cool" he just got in:
a 1966 Harmony H-78.I asked how much and he was going to sell it for and said $800.I told him in was very cool and it's a guitar that I had wanted since I was little kid drooling over the Silvertone version in the Sear catalog. But I told him about my vow never to buy another guitar and he said "well how bout if it were $600?". Aww man...I would have to be tied to the mast like Ulysses to resist that sirens song!

Thanks. It belonged to the son of the original owner. It was an H-77 when his dad bought it but it's original tailpiece was changed to the Bigsby.

I love this guitar. One of my favorite records when I was in college was Kevin Ayers "Bananamour".I bought it at "Peoples Place" in 73.

Image

Kevin Played a Harmony H-78 on the original recording of the song "May I". Love that song,it has a real VU vibe(like "I'll Be Your Mirror").

Kevin recorded a live album with John Cale and Nico(Brian Eno too!) in 74.

Thanks! I found out so more info on this guitar. This is actually is an H-76 made around 1970-1972 not 1966. I could find no date stamped inside the guitar,it just says 0095H75."The Harmony Guys" told me you The Bigsby was probably installed at the factory making it an H-76. The The H-75 and H-76s have a Sunburst finish. The H-77 and H-78 has a Cherry Sunburst Finish."The Harmony Guys" told me that you could tell it was a latter version(70-72) because of the plastic F-hole inserts and the white knobs.

Photo below is from the 1965 Harmony catalog

You can get a good look at Dan Auerbach's guitar in the vid below(at about 13:30). You'll notice the headstock on his says says "Harmony by Heathkit".
It was originally sold as "Build it yourself" kit at Radio Shack.

Well how about $300?
Don't want to be a total dick, but someone have to buy this one. ebay

Actually it is not the same model, but they are almost the same eggs. I made some research and think that it is an offer of the century. cause all twin models like Aria, Norma, etc. cost two or three times more expensive.
