Fender Maverick clone

Post by DGNR8 »

Props to Cooterfinger and Richard on this one for being able to map and replicate the Fender Maverick genome. A while back when I had only a hacked Coronado XII neck and a XII guard to go on. Then Cur sent me a rotary switch (and a bonus feature that I will show when the guitar is finished). I asked Richard to send me tracing of his Maverick so that I could try to reconstruct it using drawings I had made of my XII. I was able to get pretty far with it, but lacked the precision to figure out where the exact routes should be. I sent all my paper and PDF files to Cooterfinger, who goldfingered it, including a crazy accurate pickguard.

Normally I wait until a project is finished to post photos, and forget to post. But today I couldn't keep myself from spoiling the surprise. Here are three guitars in the works, including the two 70s Strats that Cooter helped rescue. There are two spots in the red area that the paint isn't sticking. I may have shot it too wet there. I am going to try to darken that edge slightly before shooting clears. But wouldn't you know I am OUT of clear cans. I decided to polish the Antigua in the interim. Oh yeah—I almost forgot to mention that I painted my own Antigua with rattle cans. It's in the same set on Flickr.

Thanks, RobertOG. I couldn't think of the name. Yeah, it's available from one of the ebay nitro sellers. Gracey? It's SO vibrant. In some lights I swear I see purple in the edges.

The antigua is nitro too.

Can't wait to see the Maverick finished. Really nice work on the Strats too.
Knowing how deep the original Antigua finish was buried on that strat a few months ago
and seeing how it looks now really makes me smile. Looks great.

bursting can be a bit of a pain, let alone with rattle cans, it indeed looks very nice, on both.

It's black on the back and sides. I may have to try giving it a black edge, but that's usually where I go OH SO WRONG.

According to Reranch, the bulk of the black stripe is actually multiple coats of red. It darkened up, but not black.

Wait until you see the headstock. And I even found the right string retainer.

Any update on this? Also, where did you get the guard? Is it stock?

I forgot about this thread. I am just waiting on pickups from Curtis Novak. Cooter made me this guard to fit the smaller neck pocket. Here's where I first got the idea for putting a Mustang trem on a Bronco.

The neck was a Coronado XII that had the top lopped off (like my XII did). I benefited from other people's madness. I glued on a new piece of maple and then covered it with a maple veneer. I will take more pics once it's assembled.
