Alternate tunings...

Post by dezb1 »

Do you use them and if so what are your favourites. I am big fan of Alan Sparhawk who is a big fan of open G, I've never got into alternate tunings (apart from the odd blast of dropped D) as the thought of learning a whole new set of chords has put me off but I'm thinking now is the time.

I tend to stick to variations on Aenstandard.

Aenstandard: DADAAE
Aenstandard Baritone: AEAEEB
Aenstandard Sludge: CGCGGD
5 String Fuck You: GGDGG
High quality, low popularity Ecstatic Fury

Half step down is what I use almost all the time. Occasionally I do drop C#, but can't be bothered because it messes with non-hardtail guitars. I played around with E B D G B E and E A D G A E for a while, but couldn't find a use for them, apart from a few open chords.

My Epi sheraton is tuned down to C though...I was trying to get a six string cello sort of sound, but didn't really succeed. The string gauge I used to achieve it (13 iirc) means that I can't tune it normally again, so until it's time for a string change it's going to stay with the C tuning.

All the Beige Palace stuff is either in CADGBC or EEBABE. This is the first band where I've properly experimented with tunings and it's definitely made me approach the guitar in a totally different way.

I've recently been using DADGAE and EADGAE recently, real fun IMO

i think this is how the studio tuned me for the blood on the bayou feedback track except the e was a d.. the song was in d but this looks close.. i wish i could remember exactly what it was.. it worked.. it was ear bleeding loud.. we put every overdrive/distortion we had on and dimed it and dimed the mesa boogie and holy shit it was ridiculous. they also ran me into the board with no feedback as a layer.
