Backup small amp head?

Post by Thom »

After a number of years I'm finally back in a band that has the potential to gig, and whilst I've got all my tube amp needs covered, I'm after a small (cheap) backup head that will give me enough clean headroom for small gigs using pedals for dirt. Any recommendations? I shouldn't have sold Fran my Crate Powerblock all those years ago!

Not a head, but Wants on Sidwell Street have a Peavey Bandit that kind of has me wishing I was fifteen and had long hair again.

What about

?

I have it and it's great with pedals.

Another option could be this, although I have no experience with it.

When you press the accelerator past halfway it doesn’t actually go any faster, but the engine noise distorts

Yeah that's one of my options, think I might take a punt if I can find a cheap one. How loud can it get?

It's pretty loud. I cranked it all the way with 2 12" cabs once and it hurt my ears. I don't think I even had the gain all the way up, I may have had a pedal on. It's not an experience I wish to repeat.

how do you feel about those little amp in a pedal things that ehx make? could go right on your pedalboard if the amp you use doesn't cut it. otherwise orange got a lot of cool small options.

I can second this. I’ve used mine through a 4x12, it can definitely cut it for small gigs

I tote around an old HH 100W head that cost me £25 as my solid-state backup amp. There's always the EHX Magnum 44 if you want to splash the cash on something really small and light.
