Yeah, "gritty" is a pretty good description. They don't have the same smoothness as the ones on my Fender Jags (or my Squier Bass VI for that matter). A couple of them have some play in them before they catch too. I've not been bothered to swap them out tbh as they're perfectly functional but they feel cheap.

A usual thing to say in a cheap guitar review from 8-10 years ago was to change the tuners and I looked at the tuners and they were generic 18:1 ratio tuners and I always wondered how the guy figured out in a 15 minute review that you had to swap them asap. Then the same people would drool over vintage Fenders with half dead Klusons and swear by how good the guitar was. Cheap Kluson knockoffs are probably noticeably flimsier though

Indeed. Looks lovely.

I've got one of the Paranormal Cyclones and it has similarly janky tuners, but is otherwise pretty great.
Curious here, what's janky about those tuners? They look like standard Klusons to me.
I replaced the same tuners on my paranormal cyclone with real klusons. Main difference is the smoothness, the stock ones are functional but gritty compared to the real thing.
Gotcha. They looked like real ones from what I could see, so I was just wondering. Yeah, real Klusons are very smooth and they hold tuning.

Exactly that, there is a bit of play in some of them and the chrome is a bit too much, like it was made of cheap garbage metal and plated up to look shiny. They're OK but either they're slipping or the nut is binding slightly, it's been drifting. On the other hand I did change string gauge by two steps and it's brand new so I guess there will be a settling-in period.
Agree with the other comments too, I suspect the buttons are chrome plated plastic. I love me some Klusons but I've been spoiled by the 80s MIJ variety.

People always used to blame the tuners when the problem is the nut 99 times out of 100.

It’s definitely the nut, I can shift pitch by pressing near the string tree

and John Mayer.

I thought that was the point though? That your strings should move freely across your nuts? That's why people give their nuts a good lubing. The problem would be that the tuner tightens the string and it jerks across your nuts or gets stuck and shoots through later, unexpectedly.

I guess he means when releasing the pressure behind the nut (fnarr), the pitch has changed from what it was before, as the string has gotten caught up?

All valid points and John Mayer does suck nuts.

And it’s never A, B, G or E, only ever D’s nuts.

Ja, string is flat, press string behind nut, string is sharp. Deez sharp nuts, not something you want.
