That Pedal Show with Mike Vennart, Fredric Effects Green Russian

Post by Progrockabuse »

Just watching this as I bloody love Oceansize.

I spy one of Tim’s green Russians on there. It sounds fucking glorious, just straight into an orange half stack.

Might have to try a big muff, never owned/played one.

Will stick this on in a bit.

My pal Naomi is playing bass in Mike Vennart's new band Empire State Bastard. It's a proper mad lineup, Mike Vennart on guitar, Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro on vocals, Dave Lombardo from Slayer on drums, and then... my mate!? Very sick and very well deserved, just quite mental.

That bandname cropped up to me on IG the other day I think; the track's pretty damn good, so sick for your mate!

I only really know of Oceansize as a band that covered Cardiacs; I really should check 'em out proper as everyone I know who's a fan is generally a person of taste (Proggie aside 😉)

The TPS video for those wanting something to click:

I discovered them after they appeared on a prog rock playlist that a friend compiled back in my college days. Their album everyone into position is well worth a listen.

Always felt like Mick and Dan are some of the more genuine content makers that enjoy each others company and show a humble approach to gear and champion underdogs and smaller companies. They managed to get some great guests to visit and really dig into the sound and setup.

No denying they’ve got some vintage/high end gear too, but feels quite balanced.

My taste is debatable these days, though it’s not all prog. currently working my way through George Harrison’s all things must pass box set.

This was a very dangerous video for me.

I also have a GT1, and the dilemma it poses for me (and Mike it seems) is that that it has two modes, the non-master, where you get those fantastic classic Matamp GT120 cleans and you can enjoy all your favourite dirt pedals.
Or, you can run it with the master volume mode, which kicks in another gain stage, and it sounds like that fuzzy or-mat stoner madness everyone expects, but good luck running anything else into that glorious noise other than maybe a boost or an EQ pedal, you're fully committed to *that* tone.

I know they started making a GT2, with switchable channels, but Vennart has solved this flexibility thing by just running two amps. *bites lip*
