Line 6 Variax external power

Post by NickS »

So here's what I've put together. Much of this you will already have seen in my guitar thread.
The Variaxes can be fed external power through a TRS cable or the RJ45 VDI connector. I'm using TRS here as an alternative to the internal 6 x 1.5V battery pack. Current drawn by the Variax seems to be about 110 mA using the 9V internal battery pack.

These cheap DC-DC modules cost under a fiver, take a wide range of input voltage and have adjustable output.

Lash-up to check it works with the Variax 300

Boxed with USB input too.

Got to have an LED at some point, but it's currently adjusted to provide 6.95V on the TRS cable, tested with +12V PSU, USB charger and USB power pack.

On load, my current USB power packs (2 x 5V 2.1A) shut down - probably inrush current or something. I'm not sure whether to try a more modern (5V 4.5A) PD-style power pack or try a different DC-DC converter. Or try some kind of current limiting. Oscilloscope out...
