NBD: Bicentennial Mustang Bass

Post by MattK »

I've been trying to scratch the Mustang Bass itch for a while now - tried Squier, Squier Musicmaster, Vintera neck etc. but none of them were right.
Then a 1976 Mustang Bass showed up on the classifieds, for a fair but not cheap price. Foolishly, I went to try it and it was too good to pass up. So now I've got some selling to do.
Original case, everything original, I doubt the pickguard had ever been unscrewed, but it had a serial sticker matching the headstock serial. Seems unambiguously 1976 but after they changed to putting serials on the headstocks. Beautiful full neck, quite heavy but in a good way, it feels like a small rock. Who could blame me?

Sweet score! The bassist in my band just picked up a 78 Musicmaster (this one) and it's also quite heavier than you'd expect, especially with the slimmer body. Just made different back then I guess!

Thanks guys - it's the most expensive thing I've bought but it was (a) a little below market for these things, (b) entirely original (I think I'm the third owner), and (c) closes the book on shortscale bass for me. Really surprised how versatile the pickup is - it's strung with old flats and it goes from gnarly twang to moody and deep just by turning the tone control. Love playing it too, the later 70s necks feel like home to me.

Looks great, it seems to have survived the last 50 years relatively unscathed too. Wish I could say the same thing!

I might have to paint the never-complete Mustang VI project white.
