Apples website wrote:If you play guitar, you?ll be particularly pleased with GarageBand?s built-in amp modeling. Effect presets give you a vintage British Invasion sound, the heavy distortion of Arena Rock, a Clean Jazz sound or still others.

So really, what you're saying is you want free recording software, that has good guitar amp simulators, or at least a reasonable distortion, and you would like to this to be mac based?

search for plug-ins; VST, Components...
you can easily use them in Garageband, just find some sites where you can download them for free, save them, then go to your HD, click on 'library', then 'audio' then 'plug-ins' and then put the 'component' files in the component map, VST files in the vst map...simple !

i think i bookmarked some interesting links
