agreed. I hate all chorus' though. I say get a tremelo that's good and just speed it up.
Apart from the fact the sounds are totally different..
I know. I just hate chorus. It's sweet and pretty sounding. I think the small clone has it's place (nirvana and whatnot), but I think it sounds like ass.

i seriously love this pedal, it can sound like a ring modulator, chorus, flagner, great pitch vibrato. i shall make samples if interested.

The Diamond Sea mod is something I just accidentally stumbled on while I was trying to do Univibe stages. I'm not even really sure that I could recreate it if I tried. The original Phase II is four stages, two of which have normal phase-y cap values (.001, I think) and the other two are much higher values (.33uf or so). I think the idea is to get a two stage phase sound synched with basically a tremolo, then add a lot of feedback. There's so much weird stuff going on in the PH-2's circuit, though, I can't really say what is making the sound. Best advice would be to buy a cheap phaser and screw with the caps until it sounds good.
And yes, almost my whole pedal board is phasers.
There's a store by me that has a Maestro phaser in stock (the one with the rocker switches), but it's around $500. They actually wanted to see some cash before they'd let me try it!
I like how chorus sounds on the low strings, but the highs always sound too pristine and chilly to me - I think i'd want something where I could control how much different frequencies are chorused.

I used to have a CF-7 (didn't care for it - too bright). It does a pretty good ring mod in "whak'd" mode, but the settings are a little unpredictable. The Ibanez PM-7 has a fast sawtooth wave setting that's much better IMO. The only crap thing about the 7 series is that they draw 10-15 times more power then most other pedals.

If you're using four, then there's nothing wrong with it. If you have four and don't use four, then that's obviously too many.

That's way too much. That model is just starting to edge up on Ebay these days. But it still doesn't seem to top $175.

Yeah - that store is really expensive. They wanted $85 for a DOD Thrashmaster the last time I was there. My ex-girlfriend's brother also has a Maestro that he's thinking about selling - don't know how much he wants, though. I'll probably just build one at some point.
