Gloss on the fretboard ala Rickenbacker

Post by gaybear »

recorded with a Ric the other, and was reminded that the feature that sticks out the most to me is the high gloss on the fretboard.
What are some other guitars that do this? it makes so much sense to me.

It's nice until you need a refret. Since the finish is applied over the frets, all of the finish needs to be sanded off the fretboard before the frets can be replaced, and then reapplied. It makes for a more expensive and time consuming process. I've often seen refretted Rics where the owners didn't bother to have the lacquer reapplied.

That said, it feels nice and it looks cool. If the guitar is not an every day player you'll never have to worry about it.

My Batwing had a highly glossy fretboard finish when I first bought it, but it's gone now. A shame.

The Ric ones are like glass, though. I'd never actually seen my face in a fretboard 'till I opened that case for the first time.

I have to say if this 950 weren't so damn short I would keep it. A thick, slick neck is really lux.

The unique thing with this is that it's glossed rosewood. I've been interested in this subject too.

I love maple glossed fretboards and wish my jag had one, so after trying a RIC recently I wondered about having it glossed over to achieve a similar feel & sound (?)
