Bad shock.

Post by chrismakesgod »

While messing about with pedals and stuff today, i recieved what felt like a really bad static shock. I found out this was because i was touching the jack of a lead that was plugged into an amp when my forearm was resting against metal components on my guitar. This has got me worried that something isn't right with my amp, pedals or guitar. Is this infact a normal thing...?

This exact same thing happened to me on Friday! I could probably do with an answer to this question too...

Is the amp grounded properly?

Get a plug checker, like this:

and check yr outlets.

It definitely sounds like a grounding issue. What kind of amp is it? New, old?

I checked my sockets last night, everything is fine, even the sockets on my surge protector.

I thought it may have been a grounding issue, but as im in the UK and we use three prong plugs, does tha not mean there is an earth in the plug incase something goes wrong?

I use two amps for a stereo effect, a line 6 spider III and an old marshall mg 30. I tested it out with both guitars and both amps, i get a little shock no matter what equipment i use. How would i make sure the amps are grounded properly...?

I should also point out that i don't get shocked when playing.

My mate thinks that because i was touching the end of the lead that should be plugged into the guitar, the current from that was running through me to the guitar.

I don't know shit about electrical crap though, and neither does he.

Did you check the plugs for both amps are wired correctly?

The MG is wired correctly, and i bought a new kettle lead for the line 6 today. Still being shocked under the circumstances i already explained.

Im going to go to my friends later on and see if i get a shock doing the same thing with his amp.
