I think like most people here (or guitarists in general), I'm usually looking for the next thing to enhance my "tone", and often find myself thinking that something doesn't quite sound right. I have come to the conclusion that this is mostly to do with my ears and/or desire to try something new no matter how satisfied I am with my setup.
However, there are those days when it all just sounds bloody amazing. Nothing I would change, just sounds right.
Today's moment of glee was brought by the following setup:
Fender '68 RI Strat w/ BKP Trilogy Suite pups -> Boss TU-2 -> Zvex SHO -> Orange Rockerverb 50H -> Orange PPC212OB
When was the last time you felt like this?
What was your setup?
Totally agree Thom and its the difference between a good gig/bad gig, writing a good song/average song, riff, etc. One thing worth pointing out is Valves behave differently, one night they will be cooking and another night they'll leave you frustrated.
One thing i have found hilarious (at my own expense) is you dont get what you pay for. I've spent thousands of pounds over the last twenty years and its been a pleasure, but when i plug in about £200 quids worth of gear (in total) and it sounds unbelievable i have to laugh. Dont get me wrong though, i am a bargain hunter and know my gear to a degree.
The other night i plugged this lot in and nothing could go wrong, every riff was memorable and oozed attitude.
Vester RG550>Boss DS-2(mode II)>Ramsay Fuzz>70's Laney Head>4x12 Session Pro Cab. Total Cost=£190.
it just seems like you've made some considered choices, and have experimented a fair bit with different gear. you've had to buy the expensive stuff to realise the cheaper stuff can be just as good. it's nice to have a mix.
Burns Cobra: Neck Pickup tone rolled off. => Devi Ever US Fuzz => Heavily overdriven amp with plenty of bass and mids.

I found heaven about two years ago with my old Dano, an Omega cable, and an Orange Crush 10. Closest thing I've ever found to a setup that always sounds good.
Also had great results using a 335 with a lipstick neck PUP and my Yamaha G100 SS amp.

HAY! Are'nt you the guy with the 335 copy?
Jus' Kidding. It definitely is mate. I tend to relax with cheaper gear as well, said it many times, i nurse the Jag and V too much, for different reasons. That's why i never hung on to my Gibsons, as good as they sound and play they dont evoke a side of my playing which i feel is my best.
i've found that more and more i'm less fussy about my sound..
i'm pretty much happy with whatever guitar is laying around plugged into almost any amp with bass at 6 mids at 6 treble at 9 volume/master at 4 and gain at 7
i get that warm fuzzy feeling about a simple set up more than any other. guitar (neck pick up) > cable > amp. It won't stop me playing about with pedals though as this is great fun and gets a sound you might need but for just pure self enjoyment its the simple things in life

Lately I have felt simple is the best for me.......
Gibson SG or Fender Blacktop Jazzmaster > EQD Hoof > Orange Dual Terror > Orange PPC212OB
Sometimes the Hoof will get swapped for my DAM Meathead clone....
My pedal board is collecting dust..... I have found I have the same affinity for tweaking my sound like Thom was originally talking about, so the less I use the more I actually play/practice
But anytime I get this setup cooking it puts a smile on my face the size of Texas......

I really like just going
Tele>Dual Terror>2X10 Cab
it's great sticking on 15 watt mode, setting a break up clean sound on the fat channel and searing lead for the TT channel. though i've got an MXR/CAE boost on the way, so that will be my lead boost sound.
though after last night, all i have is my little orange mini amp
