Canadian Gear Purchases

Post by Lucamo »

Hello,

CANADIAN fellows, where do you guys order your gear from? Websites?

LA music does not have a good selection of pedals it seems, where else do you guys shop online?
Oh, and do you get hit by customs with orders from Musiciansfriend? They are going the whole free-canadian shipping thing right now, and I wonder if I will have to pay 30 dollars in customs.

Proguitarshop - but its really boring lately. No GAS for a $400 midi chorus pedal. They do have a good return policy. Moog Audio and axeandyoushallreceive have a great selection. My first choice is always my local brick and mortar.

I just ordered a couple Pigtronix pedals right from the owner. Slightly modded Keymaster and a custom regenerator / looper pedal. Expecting them to arrive any day now, or like a week ago to be more exact. We have had 120 cm of snow this past week so that may be the hold up. Should be fun.

You don't get hit with customs from proguitarshop?

Everything there seems to be high end...

Pigtronix seems like an odd company...

I've ordered from Proguitarshop (Schecter Hellcat VI), I don't THINK I was hit with customs, oddly enough.

I haven't ordered anything from them, but axemusic.com is based out of Alberta, so no customs charges, and frequently free shipping.

LA Music is kind of weird.

I tried to order an amp from them and they sent me an email confirming my purchase and that they had secured the funds from paypal. Then I get another email the following day saying that they were out of stock and since they seemingly didnt do backorder, they just cancelled my order. But they kept the funds from paypal. Oversight on their part perhaps but I had to give them a call to get it sorted out...which after a week they never did. I had to get reimbursed through some injunction procedure that paypal has. Never placed another order.

I got my Jaguar through ebay, but probably would never do that again, unless I'm shopping for something specific, or vintage. I figure that with most of the stuff on ebay is international for me, that the price of the guitar plus shipping and duty usually ends up being more expensive than if I had ordered it through Long & McQuade.

I've never had a customs charge for pedals. Synths yes. All my guitars purchases carried about a $200 duty charge, even used.

Pigtronix stuff is innovative but I find the sound to be of a flavour that isn't to my taste. Their compressors are awesome though. I'll be posting shots of the pedals when they do arrive.

Lots of soggy snow here this morning.

Double-post

I always consider the trade-off of paying shipping charges VS paying taxes locally.

Yeah if its free shipping I won't complain about customs.. but in general I just wanted to be aware of charges... So its better to buy a geetar out of the store... get them to order the exact one I want... with pedals I guess I will do Axeand Youshall receive... they got alot of boutique brands.

Moog is pretty much unbeatable for boutique pedals.

High end new guitars and amps at Boutique Tone.

Kitt's Music A quality source of vintage gear, probably the best in terms of selection this side of HOG.
They don't really have a website but if you're ever in the Montreal area, this is the place to go.

I've bought several guitars from Pittsburgh Guitars. They generally have a pretty good selection.
Their prices are generally on par with ebay, so that offsets the custom charges.
