CORAZON DEL DIABLO

Post by DGNR8 »

Is ready to be painted. I finished sanding and taping the body. These are not quite in order, but sort of. I started taping before I sanded, thinking that the tape would protect the binding. When I started sanding, I decided it was easier and better to sand first, avoiding some of the binding, and tape after. That may seem obvious, but I have taped in other instances where the tape was very useful for matching levels. This was the plastic pinstriping tape and it doesn't sand well. It is almost like Band-aid material. Very flexible. Gorgeous stuff. Buy some. Find an excuse.

Initially I was tearing off 3-5 inch pieces and laying them on around the edges. By the time I got to the back, I was able to do it in ONE piece. The sides got one strip, and the top got another bent at 90 degrees. The hardest points were the F hole circles. The tape was bent so far it wouldn't stick. I decided to lay down some housepainting tape (like I use on necks) and cut it out with an Exacto. I may not bring a knife to a gunfight, but I have mad cutting skills.

Rather than trying to tape the holes from the inside, or spraying into the guitar, I have decided to wad up newspaper in the cavity. It doesn't really matter, but I would like to keep the inside as clean as it might have been from the factory. It looks unfinished. I would think that could change tone. Who knows? The back of the headstock is the only original lacquer, and is nicely checked. Pity. But I don't like black head Fenders unless the body matches. I will say this too--I have sanded three amateur natural poly finishes this week and they were EASY to sand. I LOVED IT.

If this thread is boring, let me know. I will delete it and poast it at Reranch. That isn't meant to be snarky. But this isn't a shortscale guitar and I don't know who reads half my weirdness anyhow. It is the most intact guitar I own, with the Bronco. I cannot even describe how enamored I am. It's the binding. I bought 2 cans of Fiesta for this guitar to be fiery red. But I am now feeling like I need to show the wood. There is almost no grain to it, so it's kinda boring, but there are natural golden highlights that are dazzling. It's no Gibson, but it ain't bad.

Thanks. I don't know what I am. I have gotten lucky with a few purchases. I was unlucky a few x before I knew what I wanted. Luckily I made out OK. I am just making up for lost time. Ebay has been my friend.

Here's the thing. I am almost certain I want Gretsch orange. I HAVE TO show the wood. I just noticed last night that a lot of these are book-matched. Two piece tops and bottoms. I am pretty sure mine was this cherry burst (but without a seam). I am not that crazy about trying a burst, and certainly not the cherry one. They do look hot in red, and I could also use Fender trans blue like this Gibson. Any color would look good really. I messed around in Photoshop and yes, sea foam is killer. Daphne looked a little wimpy I thought. But all the colors worked. Gold, copper, Coral.

The Man With The Blue Guitar
--Wallace Stevens

One

The man bent over his guitar,
A shearsman of sorts. The day was green.

They said, "You have a blue guitar,
You do not play things as they are."

The man replied, "Things as they are
Are changed upon the blue guitar."

And they said to him, "But play, you must,
A tune beyond us, yet ourselves,

A tune upon the blue guitar,
Of things exactly as they are."

Two

I cannot bring a world quite round,
Although I patch it as I can.

I sing a hero's head, large eye
And bearded bronze, but not a man,

Although I patch him as I can
And reach through him almost to man.

If a serenade almost to man
Is to miss, by that, things as they are,

Say that it is the serenade
Of a man that plays a blue guitar.

Three

A tune beyond us as we are,
Yet nothing changed by the blue guitar;

Ourselves in tune as if in space,
Yet nothing changed, except the place

Of things as they are and only the place
As you play them on the blue guitar,
Placed, so, beyond the compass of change,
Perceived in a final atmosphere;

For a moment final, in the way
The thinking of art seems final when

The thinking of god is smoky dew.
The tune is space. The blue guitar

Becomes the place of things as they are,
A composing of senses of the guitar.

Four

Tom-tom c'est moi. The blue guitar
And I are one. The orchestra

Fills the high hall with shuffling men
High as the hall. The whirling noise

Of a multitude dwindles, all said,
To his breath that lies awake at night.

I know that timid breathing. Where
Do I begin and end? And where,

As I strum the thing, do I pick up
That which momentarily declares

Itself not to be I and yet
Must be. It could be nothing else.

This is it. I am done. I have to paint a handfull of guitars and sell a few of them. Less exhuberance today. Last night was my guitar lab night and I was waiting on warm dry weather to paint.

Meanwhile I tried sanding my 63 because the finish was so thin (Krylon or someshit). It gunked up the paper but still takes forever. I AM CHEWING THROUGH PAPER. I need to buy some more big grit. I should have heat-gunned. But it is the last guitar I ever plan to sand--my birth month guitar. So a penance. I accidentally sanded off part of my thumbnail I was sanding so much. (I folded the paper and the other side was rubbing against my finger). By the end my fingers were numb. I am only about 1/3 done. That is the lightest guitar body I have ever held. It's like a toy. Of course, I could paint trans blue over what's there. But this one is my surf green.

Image

Then I snapped the tuner arm off a vintage Kluson inline 3x3 that was going on my Melody Maker. I guess it's pot metal. It was a little bent and I was trying to unbend it. The little covers are held in by metal flaps, so I would have to pry it off to replace the inner parts. After that FIASCO I just didn't want to deal. I will sell them as spares. I didn't pay much, but it was a sooper SUCK.

I was just about to relic the new plastic knobs. I have some great ideas for it. Minwax makes little stain pens! I thought I could alternate between brown dye, thinner, sandpaper, and carefully drawn stain. Art skills can really come in handy on some of this shit.

I think Gretsch Orange would look a bit better for showing off the wood. That guitar looks great so far though.

Hopefully this is one of the big keepers. The only way that would not be true is if I finish it and don't like the sound or fit or something. It would be worth too much just to sit in a corner. I can't wait for a warm day to paint.

Here's the latest.

You may not like my color choice to put Grinch orange on a Fender, but I am SO digging it. That's 3 coats of orange right now. I could go maybe one more, but it's plenty dark. I think the gold in the decal is really going to look good against the orange. All this time I have been spraying too dry. I am convinced of it. Maybe my lighting is better or I am not as cautious since I am out in the goddam fresh air. Have you ever been mid process and just felt like FUCK YES THIS IS THE WAY LIFE SHOULD BE?

I also strung a Fender properly for the first time in 30 years. Lazy no more. I am convinced.
