What weird instruments do you own/lust after?

Post by JamesBenjamin »

I have a ton of goofy things laying around that are interesting to toss into the mix every now and again... A melodica, a kalimba, a ukulele of course, assorted random percussion things, etc.

But I just saw a noise band where one of the dudes had a suzuki omnichord (q-chord?) which is essentially an electronic autoharp. WHOA, I totally need one of those things!

So what have you guys found that's totally bizarre but useful or just plain old neat sounding?

(off the wall effects pedals might fit in this category too!)

It's not really wierd, but I think electric sitars sound amazing. I've always wanted to learn how to play one.

i have a balalaika.

it's unplayable as it stands and i can't be arsed to fix it. i'd need to make a bridge and a new nut. i think it looks cool enough just hanging on the wall so it'll not be for playing.

Add some throat singing into it and you've really got something. ;)

I'd like a lap steel, a melodica, a bassoon and a hurdygurdy, please.

This!

16 Horsepower is the only modernish band I can think of that puts that instrument to constant and worthwhile use.

I own an electric kazoo. I collect children's musical toys that loop or have some unusual musical function(not circuitbent).

It's obviously never going to happen but I wouldn't say no to a Reactable.

I've recently been trolling ebay and craigslist for an omnichord as well. They're so cool.

One of these days I'll buy and learn banjo. The less feasbile/dream choice would be pedal steel, adore the sound.

I dug out my little chord organ that some bandmates got my for my birthday years back. I love the hummy, clunky sounds you get from micing it up- it's totally going on the new album to give me teh Johnstonz.

Broken apart years back to see if I could mic it in a more clean-sounding way internally. I couldn't.
