Teisco

Post by Freddy V-C »

I'm considering buying a new guitar with my birthday money. A friend of mine was obsessed with Teisco's for a while and he's got me obsessed too. They sometimes seem to go for fairly cheapz on the 'Bay, but obviously buying from there there's no chance of trying it out beforehand. So does anyone have any experience with Teisco, Kay, Zenta, etc...? Is it worth buying one, or am I better off saving my cash and getting something expensive-er and potentially sexier later on?

It all depends on the model. They made super cheapo crap with crap pickups, crappy guitars with interesting pickups, and guitars that were just plain cool and the height of Japanese design up to that point like the KL models(sharkfins) and Spectrum 5 models. It all depends.

be careful is all i'd say. a lot of them feel like they're made of paper and the necks are often fucked. and getting quality replacement parts to fit is generally going to be a bit of a headache.

They've got a certain something (I set one up for a friend a couple of years ago) but pay no more than £25.

Okay I won't do, cheers for the advice.

My aforementioned friend reckoned those ones usually went for £60-100. :?

They're shit. You can't imagine how bad these are because all beginner guitars for the last 20 years have been at least playable. These are unplayable.

yup, they're DREADFUL guitars. i got one for £20 for a laugh and immediately wished i'd spent it on chocolate or parma ham instead. pickups are salvageable, but everything else is cack.

They really are utter crap, to a point where they are at an unexplainable sense of lousiness.

Heres an old Hofner I have, has been refinished because I felt the old paint job was hazardous to my health. very similar to teisco, same tremlo and pick-ups (I still have all the hardware but It's very depressing when together, to the point where I want to cry).

im about to get one for free that looks just like that one.
same guard and all(minus the color of course)
i want to say that it has a simple trem, but an archtop styled bridge.

The refinish was just a cheap project and the original finish was bottom line horrible, so it wasn't a lost. But getting these for free is good because they are worth virtually nothing.

As long as you don't get one that's missing a tuner and has cigarettes in the pick-guard, they really aren't as bad. Plus mine is a Hofner, below the quality of Teiscos. It just sounded like absolute crap, so I destroyed it by picking parts and refinishing it.

guy on a local auction site keeps listing this one:

I find it strangely attractive. Despite the monkey grip bollocks.
I think its the set neck and the aluminium pickguard...

Guy wants retarded money for it though. aha
