For the tech savvy, building a Stagebox/snake

Post by grandnoise »

So I ordered a stagebox recently hoping it was a super cheap fully wired snake, when it arrived I realised this was not the case and that I had a pre-loaded stage box with 16 in and 4 return un-wired female xlrs.

So now I need to source a (preferably not so expensive) 20 way multicore cable and 20 male xlrs and although I know how to wire it up all the technical jargon is causing me some problems.

So if anyone could help me by showing me what I need I would be truly appreciative.

I need about 5 metres of cable and for it to be of decent quality. thank you in advance.

And a good soldering iron if you don't have one. Hopefully someone in the UK can chime in with sources of bulk cable in the UK. I know several in the US but not sure that would be very helpful. I can post some links to stuff if you just want to know what to look for.

Definitely take a look around that site. It might not be the cheapest but they have a lot of stuff available. I'm not saying they're expensive, they might be the best for price as far as I know, I just don't have any recent experience with them.

ok I have a decent soldering Iron and the skills I just need help with working out what I need, one friend has recommended I buy the individual cables separately and make up the multi coil snake myself. In which I would need 5 metres x 20 of this (I think)...

plus some sort of jacket for the whole thing and some male xlr ends (I'll go with neutrik for them)

or I could just buy this but I am not sure if the quality will be great,

can anyone some light?

Definitely go with the multicore cable; and the one you linked looks ok. Not sure what the whole "budget" thing is all about; but if you won't be hauling this thing around a bunch it should be robust enough.

Don't know how they do it for the price. The Adam Hall one gives me the impression it's more for studio and conference centre type permanent installations than gigging.
