Using a bow on guitar

Post by luciguci »

I've been a bit uninspired recently, so I tuned my Jag to GGDFA (low E down 9 semitones; A, G, and B tuned down 2 semitones, no first string) and decided to experiment a bit and found my sister's old violin and bow, so I decided to have a go at some bowing a la Sigur Ros. I got some pretty rad sounds, a bit screechy, but I'm still trying to get the hang of it.

I enjoy bowing very much!
I've had much better luck with a bass bow, though. I want to customize a guitar some day so I can still fret nicely while I bow.

I'm constantly experimenting to keep myself interested.

i've tried it a couple of times. using the rosin on the bow helps it work better, tends to be less screechy. sounds good.

Didn't Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore make that popular ?

Lee Ranaldo certainly uses a bow, but I'm pretty sure Jimmy Page got there first.

And Sigur Ros does too, etc blah blah blah, I know. It's still fun to try out when you're stuck and have no idea what to do.

I quite like the Ebow i have, since I don't have a violin/viola bow lying about. Put some delay and reverb behind it and its massive.
