whats a good cheap entry level midi sample/drum pad?

Buy a launchpad. It's fine for what you're looking for and you can use it for much more. A preowned version 1 will only cost you around Â£40. The pads look small compared to say Mascine or an MPC but having the smaller pads actually makes finger drumming easier.

I use my Push (small pads) More than my Maschine MKII.

Now the Mk 2 is out, also keep a watch on for a second-hand Launchpad S - it's supposed to be much more responsive than the Mk. 1 - but I imagine will be a bit pricier. The Launchpad Mk. 2 for Matt's Christmas present has arrived (more LED colours than the Launchpad S) so will get to see that in a few days.

If you don't mind paying the extra you could go for a Launchpad pro. It's not too expensive and has lots of great features. If you use Ableton a secondhand Push can be fairly cheap (Ableton are offering a trade in if you buy the push2 that equates to around !130 so you can get one on Gumtree etc for around that price.

I actually prefer the push to the version 2. It had harder MPC type pads, tho the screen on the push 2 is lovely. Not Â£600 lovely tho.
