PST Phantom Project Finished!

Post by HNB »

SparkleSparkle's build thread inspired me to do my own Phantom. I have kind of wanted one, but hadn't been thinking about it lately until I saw his build. Aside from the body color, this is kind of what I am thinking. (Also maple fretboard since I am using a maple tele neck.) Mods I have are: dual chrome humbuckers (I am thinking single coil ones in the humbucker cover like my Airline build), Mustang slider switch for pickup selection, and master volume with two tones. I will use a tremolo. Maybe a GFS one. I will also use a Mustang or Jazzy bridge.

Already made the decal and have it on the headstock. It isn't wetsanded yet. Still curing.

Scott at PST is already in progress with the body.

Progress will be much faster now. I was waiting on the bridge and tremolo to arrive and for my headstock finish to cure. Scott has my neck now and is going quick getting the body set up. He got the neck mounted and setup and the guard part way done.

Front done. (Actually I spent the last three days clear coating it and it is drying, but I got behind in picture updates it seems.)

Felt that urge to wetsand (which hardly ever happens) so I went at this project.

Then I worked on the electronics. This guitar is funny because the whole electronic section is attached to the guard. LOL I was able to test my wiring without the body.

Then I got the guard on the body and mounted the tremolo. The tremolo design is kind of a pain since it mounts on the guard to the body.

Got the neck and knobs on. Glad I got these vintage brass knobs. They look cool. I decided where I wanted the strap buttons. The lower one was kind of a no brainer, but the other one I put as close to the neck as the angle would allow. I didn't want it sticking out of the back of the body or behind the neck since I use straplocks.

Put some strings on and found out the tremolo causes HORRIBLE string break angle. It was basically going flat over the mustang bridge unless I jacked it up high enough to play slide guitar. I put a credit card snip under the neck to shim it and that made it much better. (Although I think I have the mustang bridge about as high as I can make it. LOL)

Looks great and sounds great. I really like these pickups a lot. They might be Greco ones, but basically they are single coils under a humbucker cover. Half the guts are empty. They just look like humbuckers. :) (Which means they have that single coil hum, but they have great tone to me.)

Thanks! It went together really quick to be honest. I think I started sanding about two or three hours ago and was done intonating and stuff an hour ago? So it took about two hours including taking the neck back off to shim and putting it back together. ;D
