i'm looking for something better than my stock garage band plugins for my home demo needs. any one know of any good free ones to try? this is to run on my macbook pro running garage band.

I don't have a ton of experience with Garage band, but from what I understand those plugins are simplified versions of the Logic amp simulators and effects. You're not going to do much better than those as far as "guitar" stuff goes.

As far as flipping out a little more goes, I always used to hit up KVR audio for freebies. That site looks a lot deeper than it was when i was prowling it...

I remember using a rob papin guitar synth for some funk lines, think I got it from computer music mag. Other than that I've used samples in ableton
