New Crate Powerblock & OD/Dist Pedals sample I made
Hi guys,
Hurb asked how the Crate Power Block took pedals and so I figured out an answer for him in sample form. I took my four dirt pedals:
Proco RAT II with Andy/Reutz resistor clip mod
Boss OD-3 Overdrive
Danelectro FAB Overdrive
Danelectro FAB Distortion
And connected them in line on my pedalboard (appreciate the effort people!) and then played them into the Power Block connected to the Celestion G12T-75 speaker in my Marshall DSL401 combo - this speaker is found in all Marshall standard cabinets and is a good allrounders.
I played clean tone samples and a variety of gain levels on each pedal so you can see how the Power Block takes pedals and how the pedals themselves sound at different gain levels - there's some chatter obviously too...
Recorded with an SM57 direct to Sonar through my Audio Interface, guitar was my Telecaster Deluxe on the bridge pickup and all music is by Rage Against the Machine

if the power block is rated to 150 watts... and the marshall speaker is 75 watts... how do you know the point where you can't go any higher on the block without a lot of sparks?
because i rly, rly want a loud clean amp of sorts.
but i'm also put off by the lack of reverb.

I'd know well before that point because my neighbours would lynch me way before I got near 75W.
The Powerblock outputs 150W in mono into an 8 ohm load, but since the G12T-75 is 16 ohms it won't deliver 150W even at Maximum level because you lose efficiency with a mismatched load.
The short answer is that you don't know exactly how high you can turn the amp up without damaging the speaker, but personally I don't think I'd ever find myself in that situation. Even playing the largest venues I've only ever got my Master Volume on my 100W Tube head up to around 5.
If you're after loud, clean and reverb then the 'Block probably isn't for you - it's more of a great all rounder to be honest.

I think the speaker will start to distort?deadonkey wrote:if the power block is rated to 150 watts... and the marshall speaker is 75 watts... how do you know the point where you can't go any higher on the block without a lot of sparks?

Jazz Chorus, for real. I use one at our practise room and it's loud as hell, has a pretty nice 'verb, vibrato and chorus, and the distortion channel isn't as bad as people make out, it's more of a gritty OD ala the Hives or something.deadonkey wrote:if the power block is rated to 150 watts... and the marshall speaker is 75 watts... how do you know the point where you can't go any higher on the block without a lot of sparks?

Lolz, stroppy.Mike wrote:And yet you didn't think to post about it.
I'm fucked if I'm dragging all my shit out to make samples again if people aren't even going to dignify it with a reply.
They all sounded good, although the amp is less bright than I'd normally set it at, so it's a little hard to imagine it with my setup.
Does your RAT's dials have not much effect after about 1 o'clock on the dial? I always thought of it as kinda weird on mine.. and I bought it new, it's not iffy or anything.

I'll have to test that hypothesis in a second but I'm pretty sure that the Distortion knob suffers from that - hence me only doing a sample of 12 o'clock and full on.Doog wrote:Does your RAT's dials have no much effect after about 1 o'clock on the dial? I'll check out Filter and Volume in a bit.
