NPD: Boss DS-1 (clipping diodes removed)

Post by luciguci »

My shit didn't get jacked after all, the maildude just dropped it off on the wrong street. I've been using it today and it's surprisingly a good pedal for shoegaze sounds. I'll record a demo later, but the lack of clipping diodes really opened it up, it's way less compressed and thin sounding than I remember it being. It's great for lo-fi fizz with some vibrato too, I'm glad I have one again.

Learned from the serial number, this one was made in June 1998. Here's the diodes clipped out, I'd like to clean out those points and solder in some sort of sockets to try out different diodes and diode combinations sometime and not have to destroy the board constantly swapping them out.

starting with bridge pickup, middle, then neck
distortion knob set at minimum, 9:00, 12:00, 3:00, and maximum, and then back to minimum.
tone is set to just before 12:00

played on top of My Forgotten Favorite by Velocity Girl
Tone: just before 12:00
Level: 12:00
Distortion: around 3:00

for fun, same setting, three pickup settings
Left: bridge, Center: both, Right: neck

I'm actually really wanting to get a DS-1 as I've never really used one.

Got chance to listen to the clips today, sounds improved, less woolly.

It's got teh Bob Mouldz Husker Du sound and im positive he used a MXR D+ during that period.

This is the meme-y-ist post Fran has ever made.

It's also 100% true.

You can smell the Mansfield bitter that's been spilt all over that board.

I'm trying to find a DS 1 for cheap but they all seem to be £35 +

Seems about the going rate on eBay, there's a few slightly cheaper on Cashies:

ENO Trinity is a clone of the ds1 with 3 modes for £23.

There’s probably a Donner too. And the Mooer could be had used for peanuts.

None will have the same kurdtz mojo though...

This was the best shootout and demo I could find and it fucking RULES. The micro pedal clone seems to be thicker, fuzzier, and basically I'd love to find out what circuit changes they made to get it to sound that way because it slaps.

I’ve noticed that extra switching on these micros typically clones famous Keeley or Monte Allums mods. A lot of the time, funnily enough, extra diode clipping options, so switching in and out the change you’ve made to yours, or LED, germanium diodes etc...

I got a DS-1 again a couple weeks back. It's weird everyone hates them.
