I will never again accept any colour other than black for the plastic bits of a sunburst guitar. My Jaguar came with a tort pickguard and white pickups, as is usual, and I hated it. When I slapped that black 'guard and took the pickup covers off, the whole thing suddenly made sense. An ugly, dysfunctional guitar became a beautiful, dysfunctional guitar.

Well, weird grain sunburst; we had a good run.

Thanks to Northwest Guitars UK, I picked up a relative inexpensive body (£165 I think) because both 'black-n-gold, AND 'black-n-tort' look siiiiiick. Euan is likely refinishing the sunburst for me in some form of surf/seafoam green so I've got many options.

The body came drilled for everything other than the pickguard holes, so I set about fillin' em up:

Stay down, damnit. The earth connection has been drilled to go to the tailpiece (rather than the bridge), so nothing more to do here other than SMACK

This is what is called a 'Pro Move'; get fucked, restringing!

Strung-up to the lemons, thanks to the brave (oddly-grained) donor

Although this guard pretty much fit on the stock VM body, if you check out the bridge cup routes, they're a bit off on this new bod. I read last night that there's some discrepancy between various JM models, Fender vs. Squier etc, and I think this body maybe uses a standard US Fender measurement, not a big deal as it can still intonate fine.

As such, and it getting late in the evening, I opted to file down the sunburst's Classic Player torty guard instead, as the noise was less horrific.

Hot dog, that's a good looking jazzy. Love the idea of black and gold, haven't seen that before.

SEX (if you're into that sort of thing)

There's something to be said about a tort on black especially with a matching headstock.

Superb Doog. Whilst I love black and tort, get that gold guard on it ASAP!

Despite some ugly drill-n-file routing (hidden by the bridge, idgaf) and needing to drill in the remaining 12 pickguard screw holes, we're done:

Image
Navigating body-mounted pickups with a metal guard sure does make everything a tight fit, DANG. Likely scuffed up the sides of the pickups but nothing really visible so ehhhh.

Pretty cool, not 100% sure it's as hot as black-n-tort (honestly why I got the Jag in the first place), but both are still a step up from the 'sunburst shed' look.

Will defo need to source a nice art deco strap in a non clashy colour, the work never ends, swoon

Oooo

Hard to say. It looks great but I prefer gold on colors to gold on black, while tort on black is tried and true. It def looks more striking with gold....Gonna be honest and bear with me here, but I think it needs white hats and a *amber* for the gold to work proper.

Right now as it sits I think tort works a little better. Just my opinion.

The colour balance is a little nicer in natural light, but I hear you. For my money, *amber*s look goofy against the white plastics, like a clown nose. Jury's out on witch hats; I love them in this kinda context though, more matchy-matchy:

Ooh, definitely the black and gold. Pretty sure I have some black witch hats here, shout if you want them posting. Will also take some reference snaps of my surf green for you too.
