Welcome to the Westcountry, baby. Chris, I'd also look at the new Epiphone Wilshires.

I came in here to post about Gordon Smiths too.

I'd also echo the suggestion that something dual humbucker for that rawness. Possibly also a good tele for the same reasons.

Mex standard teles ~2008-15 are quite cheap sometimes, and a nod nicer than earlier examples of the same model. They have long lasting hard fretwire and the forum-hated multi-piece alder bodies are actually all right in many of these late model standards. Many for sale are barely used, and nothing in them requires immediate updating. Pots are full size and really, nothing is wrong. The player models are probably not worse but not necessarily better either, just different. Certainly more expensive.

The old standard tele had ceramic very un-tele-like pickups, but they work well for anyone who isn’t a country picking tele purist. Replacement parts are cheap and everywhere if modding is your thing. Vintage tele bridges are a bolt-on update, but again, the standard parts are good. Just unsexy.

THIS is the mondeo, just more reliable. Dont pay more for mods, as they rarely make it better but are rather a warning sign of the owners tendencies to fiddle around in often dodgy ways. £350-400 tops for a nice one. Look for tweed gig bags from this era, they are nice and many bought one to use with their standards, can be had for nothing. New tweed bags arent as nice.

whats the paranormal series? I did like the CVs I had them previously. Just been looking at some of the tele's

been there, done that. you need more tone in your chocolate fingers on an accordion to pull it off

I have had a used Gibson SG for £500 before. I did like it a lot. Maybe worth a search to see what's about

A brand that is most affordable in the UK, not a lot of those around.

-edit-

The new ones might be good too, but haven’t tried so can’t say.
I've never taken to Gordon Smiths or Burns guitars. Maybe worth a look, ideally play one but with lockdown that might be hard

New last year, reissues of the Toronado, Supersonic and Cyclone amongst others. Robroe got a couple and said they were good. Link.

i've lost count of the guitars I've had Nick but if it was the black one with a case the I think it was. just remember how good an SG and a rat sound at times.

been looking over the classic vibe teles this last day. tempted by the 70s thinline tele with the wide range humbuckers

Seen this (and a few others) a while back, Rob Thorn is such a dude; something about him reminds me of Bill Hicks at points, can't put my finger on why.

Aye, that’s the one.

Also sorely tempted by the Squier Thinline.

The seafoam sparkle one are also tempting

I'm a bit of a sucker for maple necks and witch hats and the big headstock

I love the sparkle, but the semi-hollow-ness will get you playing more (it makes for the perfect unplugged sofa guitar) and it's where the magic's at, IMO.
