Bowie Comp - Does Androgyny Dream of Electric Beats?

Post by gusman2x »

Submissions below:

First up, Lorez's electro goth track - Bowie Berlin Ideas

Great use of German language samples (which I found incredibly hard to find good ones). The The big slow attack pads, reminiscent of a 90s Batman movie, coupled with the percussive hook make for a real driving sound.

Next up is Dez's really beautiful and stirring reimagining of Warszawa. Very cinematic, wonderful production quality. I would easily believe that this was played live.

Definite John Carpenter vibes coming off this one from Bacchus Paul. I do like a bit of horror in my downtime. The wavey saw melody adds a level of un nerve to it that's awesome. Don't know the reference material, but I'm a Bowie luddite - Edible Cannibals - A Line Has Two Sides

And to finish up, something oddball, that doesn't fit. But there you go - Heroes

Thanks Dez, Paul, and Lorrez, and any other submissions feel free to link at the end of the thread, and I'll add here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Closing date Sunday 21st of March

David Bowie, the Berlin Trilogy (Low, Heroes, Lodger)

A reimagining, an electronic cover, an abstract inspired by track around the - they're all welcome. An electronic bent is preferred.

I will update the contributors below and then do the comp once all are submitted. CD-R preferred.

gusman2x - Heroes (sorry)

uff da, yeah I'm interested. LIke, I really really want to do shit like that.
UNfortunately school, kids, puppy, previous musical commitments, and trying to keep a marriage on the rails dictate that I do not participate.

I’ve not done much with my synths aside from band work, but I’d like to and would be interested in trying this.

Yep, I'm in.

A possible source for prompts:

http://makingmusic.ableton.com/

This is the fancy book that Cycling '74 published filled with approaches to beginning, progressing and finishing compositions. I always wanted this book. Then my wife bought it for me because she's brilliant. Then the next week Ableton sent me a copy for free anyway because we'd just started using it in school.

And now it's free online.

also source of inspiration could be Attack Magazine's website - Web Page Name

Most of my gear is packed away apart from ableton on my laptop. I'm up for doing something, probably more theme'd than genre specific. I'm trying to get back in to guitar but want to use it with my synths and even ordered a module to use it to play my eurorack so this might help me focus a bit

That would be my first thought too, but it might be that being "forced" into new/uncomfortable genres would cause new inspiration.

but my mind was melded in the late 90s listening to Gabba so anything slower sounds like reggae ;)

As much as this would be fun, I can barely focus on the physical instruments I have, much less attempt to focus on my piss-poor production skills

cool, sounds like a few ppl are up for it. I guess it's a bit like the old monthly compilations we used to do.

also surprised robroe isnt involved given his recent embrace of depeche mode and buying a ms101

I reckon Gus takes charge here and tells us what to do, even if just for the first one.

Where the fuck are you Gus? Bit fucking early to be dropping the ball here.

Coolio.

So what if everyone interested suggested a theme/task and then we can poll it?

Could be as varied as: reimagine the Top Gun theme, or make a track that conveys the feeling of looking out the window at your jet engine on fire.
