2021: A Year in Gear

Post by Bacchus »

What did you get this year?

For me, it's been a year of sensible, grownup purchases.

I got a Zoom H1n because my wife wanted to do some podcasting type stuff for her business. It's been great for all sorts of things. Has worked well for recording choirs and band practices (spookily good at this sort of stuff).

I got a hand cart, to help me move my amp. This is probably the best "gear" purchase I've made in years.

I got some ear plugs, to help me not go deafer quicker.

And for Christmas, I'm getting an M13, so at least I'll have some silly, fun purchases this year.

What about you?

I got a Daphne Blue Squier Cyclone and a couple of pedals made by a guy in Canada (a Tone Bender clone and a Germanium overdrive). Oh, and a DingoTone distortion.

Maybe a Boss DC-2w too (might have bought that at the end of last year)?

Stone Deaf PDF-1X
Boss Super Overdrive
Hotone Krush

Korg Volca Sample 2
Korg Volca FM

Arturia Keystep Pro

More than I expected... yikes.

Other than the Keystep Pro, most of what I've bought has been for the purpose of just noodling and making new sounds for my own amusement. I'm not really striving for anything specific or in particular, I'm just using my gear as a way to relax and mess around, and it's been doing the job. I built a wooden stand to put all four of my Volcas in (the Bass and Keys I bought last year) and it's like an almost self-contained little experimentation station. Plug in some reverbs and it's good fun.

Ibanez Iceman
ANOTHER Boss DD-3 (thanks Dots)
TC Electronic Sub 'n' Up
TC Electronic June-60
TC Electronic Eyemaster
Electro Harmonix Silencer

Also, tenuous, but I finally got a Numark DJ controller so I can actually practice at home rather than winging it every time I DJ somewhere.

I did a lot of rebuilding this year (after selling off 90% of my gear after separating from long term partner) and trading largely out of boredom during all the COVID times over the last year and a half. I basically started with cheaper gear and gradually traded up to ”proper” version. Most of the stuff in the out list I actually got in this window too (apart from the Phoenix and the Tele). Looking at the list now I should have documented it on a YouTube channel. I’ve bound to have missed a few things.

Soundcraft Mixer
Elektron Digitakt
Arturia Microfreak

Broughton Audio Locust Star (fancy RAT)
Black Arts Toneworks Quantum Mystic
Earthquaker Hizumitas
(three dirt pedals that make my board look like I'm in a doom tribute act)

Pearly gates neck pickup

oh and I bought that Teisco/Coronado mashup guitar.

I bought nothing all of 2020, covid making international orders impossible (even this year most stuff was local) and I was on reduced wages for sixth months and had no idea how work was going to shake out.
Got an HX Stomp at the end of 2019 and that's probably stopped me buying a bunch of shit. Still need a proper polyphonic octaver.

Give it some time and the neck alone will cost three times what you paid for the guitar

I have slowed right up on gear purchases and sales because I'm a boring old curmudgeon

I did turn 40 this year though and searched the web high and low with shortscale's help to scratch the itch left by the Telecasters I loved and lost.

I got a Fender MIM Telecaster Thinline secondhand after Hurb found it for me and sold various parts of it I didn't like, and the case, and did the following modifications:

- Fender CuNiFe Wide Range Humbuckers (gave the originals to Hurb, it's only fair)
- 1M pots
- mint scratchplate
- replaced the original tuners

Very nice! Its cool you can get the proper ones now. Did you do a demo of the new vs old?

I finally managed to find a bound Tele 62ri after on-off looking for yonks. Will update when it arrives.
