NGD: Gibson ES-335

Post by Thom »

One of my gear goals this year was to sell off a bunch of pedals and other guitars to make space/money for a 335. Found this one in stock and couldn’t resist. It’s really nice, played for a few hours last night and oiled the fretboard. Will report back when I’ve played more and the honeymoon period is over but for now I’m really pleased. It came in the Jim James case which is cool, not sure whether that was a mistake at Gibson or at GAK. It’s a 2022 serial so must have just come in as I couldn’t find them in stock anywhere last week.

Very nice. I'm glad it's not mine as I'd have a ding in it within a week.

Thanks guys :D Been playing a fair bit today and a really enjoying it, it’s really easy to play. Getting some lovely tones, and loving the middle position. It’s very loud acoustically, much more so than my Dad’s 335 type Aria. Measured the pickups and they are 6.9k neck and 7.4k bridge.

Cheers! It’s got the T-type pickups in it. They sound good, had read that some people found them overly bright but that’s not what I’m hearing at all. Not too hot, but still quite pokey.

Very nice. Do these usually have bound f-holes? It looks nice and sleek without.

Yeah I have the Memphis Historic Spec II in my one (2019), people say the same thing about those. This is the sound of old PAFs. Way brighter (in a good way) so you’re out of the muddy sound you can get with some humbucker guitars.

335 F-holes aren’t bound, they’re usually just painted black. Bound F-holes are a rarity on Gibson guitars. I only recall seeing them on those super expensive, ultra gaudy guitars.

It’s a real stunner. Probably the only lefty in that colour too.

Have you decided if you’re going to get them to ship out the correct case or are you going to keep that one? Did it have the correct COA etc in there?

I think I’m going to keep the case, I like it! And yeah all the paperwork is correct for the guitar so a funny mix up with the case only.

It’s definitely a way cooler case. I was just thinking more if you ever sold or traded it. Gibson folk are quite into everything being stock, inc case and gubbins y’know?
