NGD: Iceman ICX120

Post by Freddy V-C »

You might recall I bought an ICX220 on eBay just over a year ago. It turns out that when I was hunting for a cheap Iceman, a friend of a friend was giving his away. Our mutual pal acquired it with the intent to pass on to me, but then she forgot and it was left gathering dust until last week. Long story short, now I have two Icemans (Icemen?). And I didn't even pay for this one!

I'm fairly sure this is an ICX120, essentially the same as my other one, but with a bound body and Axis pickups (the ICX220 has Infinity pickups). The neck finish feels a bit glossier but I'm unsure whether they've just worn differently or what.

Yes, I need to vacuum really badly.

I will probably take out the neck pickup, same as my first one, because I never use the neck and I like my guitars as light as possible for gigging. Using the pickup selector as a makeshift killswitch is also very handy.

I'm also considering a re-finish (potentially by our Euan) and maybe adding a daft LP Junior-style pickguard to cover the neck pickup hole.

Although I originally bought the first one as a bit of a "joke" guitar, similar to when I played a Warlock for a bit a few years ago, I'm actually really surprised by how well these seem to suit me and my playing style. Sat down properly with this one for the first time last night, and ended up finally cracking a new tune I've spent about 18 months trying to figure out a proper structure for.

That’s the tour where I first saw an Iceman (tho’ Star Child would point out it's a Paul Stanley model.

But this pic also informed my love of ‘em

I'd just been banging on to Freddy how alarmed I was to discover my ('burst-ish) Les Paul was my dream guitar; this image alarmingly on the money.

Rad, I love how this is basically your signature guitar now!

I think your next guitar should be a Fireman:

Freddy, I just noticed your Iceman doesn’t have the neck pickup, very Malcolm Young of you.

The pickup ring for the bridge pickup was so huge that my strings were basically touching the pickup if I didn't want insanely high action. The other pickup ring was more sensible, so I got my guitar tech pal to swap the rings and ditch the neck pickup as I basically don't use the neck anyway (only guitar where I've ever liked the sound of the neck was my old Yamaha SG200). Makes a surprising amount of difference to the weight as well!

At some point I'll probably do the same thing with this new-er Iceman. Although the pickup rings on this one are less ridiculous.

One of my graduates makes guitars now, and there's a Iceman Jr. bubbling under in my future maybe.

if shortscale.org fucked around and made a buttrock model this would be it. it needs to be "vintage cherry" though
