If you ignore all the maths in that, it's all pretty much something I've worked out for myself.

But there is no fun in being meticulous about your tuning. Like he said Pavement weren't and they have always been one of my favourite bands.

That article explained some of the things I was hearing with my own tuning for awhile and how to fix it. I was going insane for a while because my tuning was always off. That article helped a lot.

i'm going to the library tomorrow because in one of the guitar player mags i saw that article that he notes, the one called "The Harmonic Tuning Myth" or something like that. if i do find it i'll type a transcript of it, and post it!

The only correct "in-tune" I've found is to tune up the E string (either by ear or with a reference note sample on the computer), then fret the D string at the second fret (harmonic E) and tune those two, then the Gstring to the G fretted on the E string, then fret the G string on the second fret (harmonic A) to tune the A string, and so on. Basically I just tune the whole guitar to the harmonics of the E string instead of fifths. Of course there's the follow up check of the strings to make sure they are in tune both open and fretted.
