ZAKK WYLDE uses it like a tubescreamer. He has his own MXR overdrive now though. Tubescreamers/808's are used all the time in THE METAL cause they tighten up lows and focus the mids. Depends on what you want out of it. You can serve up some death metal for shure.. Agreed, it's a bit too heavy for my liking tbh, although the distortion is very smooth. I was at NAMM 2011 and these were in the backline at most stages..Guys were just plugguing in thier pedalboard and they sounded as good as anthing there.
