Congrats! Its my favorite amp for clean tones that I've used (and I have a JC-120). The drive channel really depends on what tubes you're using though, and I almost always use pedals for that.

The only OLC kit I tried was a failure as well.. I havent gotten around to debugging it yet.

If you are a new pedal builder, BYOC sells a "Confidence Booster" which is an easy build. They used to give them away for free to new customers purchasing a kit, but I don't know if they still do. The easiest builds they have (in my opinion) are the ESV Fuzz (Fuzz Face) and the 250+ (DOD 2...

For the absolute beginner I think BYOC is by far the easiest. They have a ton of pictures in their build documents and it's really paint by #.
