It sounds fine through my hi-fi speakers, but the commonplace technique for recording acoustic guitar seems to be to send it through a high pass filter that completely obliterates everything except the upper mids and treble. That's often acoustic guitar being mixed with other instruments though, whe...

I was browsing the Aria site (because, y'know, it's a four day weekend) and they have not one but two CIJ ES-335 copies that have a more "conventional" Gibson/Epi style headstock. Personally I don't mind the headstock shapes one way or the other, but those two models are bloody gorgeous. E...

Incoming NPD: Xotic EP Booster

Waiting on the 'bay seller posting it out early next week. I missed the Squier JM bari yesterday, but saw this up for £100 and had been curious about them for a while. I look forward to finding out what the fuss is about these. Reading between the *amber* lines of "magic pedal" and &quo...

^Gotta agree with what's been said above. Give that thing a refin and it's a keeper.

+1 for the Slowdive connection. <3 those guys (the last time I saw them, Neil was using an Epi Casino which is fully hollow too iirc).

Zilla do a few 1x12s: LANK. The "dinky" version is particularly smol.

They're great people to deal with, and the prices are reasonable with plenty of choice for speakers too.

That's absolutely batshit. In a good way. The "pause" control is a nice touch. At the beginning of the vid, it reminded me a little of a Small Stone in the "high" color mode, but the other sounds are utterly demented. The "secret" mode looks like it might take a little ...

New mic day: Rode NT1

Not to be confused with the mic of the same name that Rode made back in the day. This one's a new design apparently. I was eyeing up another recording mic for the home studio and got curious about a large-diaphragm condenser that you can pick up for £200 and still have change for a coffee afterwa...

Fascinating. It's interesting to see the DS-2 is discrete components rather than op-amps...I normally expect newer versions of a circuit to go more towards the op-amp route because I assumed it would be cheaper. One of these days I'm going to buy that book that Boss published where they interview th...

I picked one up from a local second-hand shop at the weekend for just under £30. You really do need a decent tube/valve amp to run it into, but it does produce some usable sounds. I dunno. I was expecting to be disappointed, but it's not bad. Maybe there's some snobbery going on in the sense that...

When I see "silicon Fuzz Face," I immediately think of Gilmour going for it during the "live at Pompeii" version of Echoes. If this can nail that same gnarly old-school sound. I'm sold.

I enjoyed it. Doing a "professional" job of a podcast is harder than it sounds, but then the "two amateur enthusiasts chatting" format is perfectly fine in its own right.

The second half is being uploaded tomorrow, I assume?

Hmm...it might be the angle of the camera, or patchy quality control...which admittedly shouldn't be an issue at this price point, but just look at pretty much every Gibson that's produced these days. high E strings sitting close to the edge of the fretboard do seem to be a particular issue o...

Slap some heavy gauge strings on, tune it down real low and you can do Presidents of the USA covers! :D

Agreed. When restringing, I always give a new string a couple of tugs at various points along its length, then fret a few notes and do a bend at different frets. Plus a quick check to make sure they're not getting stuck in the nut or bridge saddle slots. Those are literal sticking points that can ir...

I really like the blue one too. Looks like binding on the fretboard as well. I'm still hoping they make another baritone JM though. I plan to pick up the Squier version as a birthday present to myself, but I'm not sure they'll still be in stock come April time, what with it being a 2017 model and al...

Yeah, the Fender Blender is one of my favourite "so bad it's good" effects. Virtually every setting apart from the most subtle is clanky, robotic mangled awfulness of the best possible kind. The piano-like spanky jangle of a JM will go well with it I reckon.

Damn, that was fast. It was shipped on Monday by second class post, but arrived this morning  First impressions, based on other muff versions I have at home: lots of gain, but less of the "choked" decay to the notes that you get from the NYC reissues. There's a lot of volume on tap ...

Incoming NPD: Violet rams head muff clone

As a Christmas present to myself, now that I've finished shopping for the family, I've bought another muff off the 'bay. According to conventional wisdom, the violet version is a bit brighter and higher-gain than is normal for triangles and rams heads, so I'm expecting it will pair up well with dark...
