Bought a Mustang Body - Can you tell me something about it?

Post by jagsonic »

Hey, just purchased a mustang body with pickups and electronics. It was refinished and i'm curious what you folks will say - what kind of body is that? japanese? usa? I think original colour was CAR with competition stripe (you can see the stripe when holding the body in the light). Just one original pickup left. Someone routed a humbucker in there.

USA, it appears vintage to me. I see shielding plates. The neck pickup is vintage and so are the pots I believe. An original competition Mustang.

I'm not sure. But the switches appear to be older. Could be Japanese but my guess would be vintage.

It's not possible to tell much since it's been refinished, but it looks like the late 1960s-1970s style. If it's pretty heavy, it's most likely USA.

I think it's a 1974 pickup based on the numbers. You can also look up the numbers on the pots to get an idea of what year they are. That will get you in the ballpark year wise.

Not sure on the comp years. Probably near the end of the comps for that period.
As for the pots, just google "dating cts pots". There's lots of info on them.

Might be a 9 and not a 4, the pots might not be original.

Yeah, I just noticed the white posts on the pots. Never saw those before.
Pretty sure that's a 4 on the pickup though.

Need to sleeve the leg of the tone cap that goes to the tag, that's not good.

Just looked once closer. The pots are 73, the last number on the pickup is a 4. So i think it's a 74.

I'd never seen fender pots with the white posts before but after a little searching I ran across this.

http://reverb.com/item/128042-vintage- ... ision-bass

Also, from what I've been reading 1971 was the last year for comps during that era but if you google 1972 and 1973 comp mustangs there's pics that people are claiming are from those years. :?:

Just found this:

Thanks. I think mine is a really wild modded 74 body. I've bought a squier jag neck and some hardware. Stripping it will be no pleasure though i don't want a CAR mustang. So i will paint it in a daphne-style blue, let the humbucker in and build a kurdy mustangthing. :-)
