There's loads of things like lightweight tuners and lighter neck plates, although thats a lot of mess for a few hundred grams.

In that case go for it, we're mostly BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM messing with you cuz 5 strings are generally associated with shit but do what you gotta do bro. Hated a 5 when I borrowed one. My fingers kept going in the wrong place.

one semi benefit of the 5 is that the useless B string is a great thumbrest.

Stopped by guitcenter yesterday, played a few different five strings like a musicman, some ibanez sound gear stuff and a jazz bass etc. The music man basses were superb, strin spacing and width wasn't so much a bother, but would take some getting used to. The ibanez sound gear had thin necks and felt cramped but sounded grea for the mid price range. Jazz bass is out, hug neck, huge body, just uncomfortable all around.
I kept going back to the $200 jaguar bass with the humbucker and active electronics, its not perfect but damn its a fine instrument for $200. I played the jaguar basses with the PJ setup and didn't like them at all. I also got to play through an ampeg svt clasic or whatever and an acoutic 410/115 setup, HOT BAWLS it was awesome!

I played the 5 strings enough to get the feel for what the low b could do for me. There's loads of applications but nothing I would use over and over. It'd be a "sometimes" thing.

I'm a bassist.

I suggest learning on a 4 string unless you KNOW you will be using the range that a 5 string provides. I have a bunch of 4 strings, and only one 5 string. At this point (15 years playing), I only picked up the 5 string earlier this year because a musical i played pit orchestra for required it. It really wasn't that hard of a transsition, and if i hadn't NEEDED it; i think i'd be fine with a 4 for everything else.

The HB Jaguars are totally sweet, and a good deal for that $200ish price. Did you play the active or passive, or passive shortscale P/J version?

4... or 6!

Master the 4 and be super awesome at it or play 6 and impress everyone with ur Bass VI.

OR play a 5 string and look like a douche
